For costume designers and prop masters on a romance film: we design and build light-up gowns, glowing hand props and matched LED wardrobe for the ball, the prom and the wedding, with color by remote and rechargeable packs hidden in the costume. Custom work is quoted: send your script pages and shoot date.
What can we build for a romance film’s lit scene?

The ballroom goes dark, the music starts and the lead walks in glowing. That moment is wardrobe and props, and it is what we build. Neon Cowboys designs and makes custom light-up pieces for production teams, and we sell them to the production. Custom work is quoted.
- One-off light-up wardrobe: a hero gown, a lit veil or a jacket for the lead, built to the costume designer’s sketch.
- Multiples in custom colors: matching looks for bridesmaids, a prom court or a ballroom ensemble.
- Hand props from scratch: a glowing crown for the prom queen, a lit bouquet, a masquerade mask.
- Light-up set pieces: an arch, a backdrop or a dance-floor feature that sits in the shot.
LEDs are built into each piece, color changes by remote, patterns can be programmed, and rechargeable packs hide in the costume or the prop.
Light in the shot, not added in post
A lit gown is practical lighting: a light source that is in the shot. It throws color onto the lead’s face, the partner’s hands and the floor, and the camera records it in-camera, so the glow is in the dailies instead of being added in post.
Production designers already build romance scenes this way. On Crazy Rich Asians, production designer Nelson Coates says the props team fabricated hundreds of handcrafted copper-wire butterflies and fireflies on artificial branches, highlighted with LEDs, for wedding guests to lift out of the grasses as the bride walked down the aisle (source: Inside Weddings). That is a hand prop, made in multiples for background actors, and it lit the scene.
Our own pieces have been filmed for Apple’s iPhone 13 night-mode campaign and Google’s commercials. Talk to us about your camera and lighting plan before the build, so brightness and color suit your setup.
Hero, stunt and background versions for a lit romance scene
| Scene | Hero piece | Background and multiples | Light behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ballroom waltz | The lead’s light-up gown, built for close-ups | Matching lit pieces for the ensemble couples | One soft color, then a slow change by remote on the turn |
| Prom or homecoming dance | The prom queen’s glowing crown | A court in matching dresses, one color | A solid color for dialogue, a pattern for the dance break |
| Wedding aisle | The bride’s lit veil or gown | Glowing hand props for the guests | White, held steady down the aisle |
| Rooftop proposal | A lit jacket or wrap for one lead | A light-up arch or backdrop behind them | Low brightness so faces stay readable |
| A fall or a dip in the dance | A soft stunt version with the pack secured | Doubles in the same color for the stunt performer | Matched to the hero piece |
Hero pieces carry the close-ups and the working light. Stunt versions are soft and safe for action. Background versions carry less detail and read at a distance. Order multiples and doubles for continuity, so a reshoot or a pickup day matches the first take.
Ready-made pieces for the costume department

Not every lit look needs a one-off build. We make these pieces ourselves and sell them as they are, so a costume designer can fit them on the cast before committing to custom work.
- LED fringe sequin dress: a sequin bodysuit with snaps and one layer of LED fringe from a V seam at the hips, in silver or black sequins, sizes XS to 4X. Color changes by remote, and the rechargeable pack gives 4+ hours per charge. It suits bridesmaids, a prom court or a dance-floor montage.
- LED rhinestone gem headpiece: hundreds of hand-set crystals on a face-framing frame that light in color, on a rechargeable pack. A crown for a ball or a masquerade.
- Out Past Midnight boots: transparent heeled boots lit with EL wire, one color per pair (white suits a bride), on 2 AA batteries per boot; see light-up shoes for weddings.

Glowing hand props and set pieces, built from scratch
When the script calls for something that does not exist, we design it: the crown he places, the bouquet she carries, the arch they kiss under. We work from your sketch or mood board, build the LEDs in and hide the rechargeable pack in the handle, the base or the costume. Crowns for prom and royal-ball scenes, masks for a masquerade, and arches or table pieces that work as practical lighting in a wide shot are all quoted. We sell what we build, so the production keeps it for reshoots and pickups.
How many pieces does a wedding or ball scene need?
Count by version, not by actor:
- Hero: one per lead, plus a double for long days.
- Stunt: one for each fall, lift or dip.
- Background: one per featured extra close to camera; extras at a distance can wear simpler pieces.
- Spares: one or two in each color, for continuity.
Charge every pack the night before, recharge between setups, and give one person on the costume team the chargers.
Built by a designer-led light-up fashion house
Neon Cowboys is a designer-led light-up fashion house founded in 2014 by Asia Hall, a computer science graduate and the daughter of couturier Kevan Hall, so a lit gown from us reads as a gown first. We have made custom pieces for Beyoncé, Machine Gun Kelly and Kim Petras; see our couture collection for one-off pieces.
