What light-up pieces can we build for a dystopian or post-apocalyptic shoot?

Dystopian film light-up props: three actors in trench coats and red LED harnesses on a rainy ruined street set

In a broken world, light means power, and power tells the audience who’s in charge. A rebel’s rig that still glows, a checkpoint that glows red, a raider crew lit in one color: those are wardrobe and prop choices, and we build them.

  • One-off wardrobe: a lit harness, jacket or rig for a lead.
  • Hand props from scratch: wrist computers, lanterns, scanners and weapons with light built in.
  • Faction multiples: our harnesses and pieces in your custom color for a crew, a militia or a crowd.
  • Set pieces: checkpoint lights, lit barricade trim and glowing salvage for the set decorator.

Every piece has LEDs built in, color by remote, programmable patterns and a rechargeable pack hidden in the costume or prop. Neon Cowboys is a designer-led light-up fashion house founded in 2014 by Asia Hall, a computer science graduate and the daughter of couturier Kevan Hall.

Wardrobe that looks scavenged and still lights on cue

Post-apocalyptic clothing is layered, broken down and built from whatever survived. Light-up pieces have to sit inside that look. Our LED halter harness and LED leg harness set are black strapwork with silver hardware and LEDs down every line, so they read as gear, not party wear, under a torn coat or over a dusty base layer. Both change color, so one faction can glow red and a rival crew another color entirely.

Tell us how the costume department plans to age and break down the outer layers before we build, and we will tell you plainly where the wiring and packs need to stay clear. The rechargeable packs hide in the costume, and the leg set’s modes change by remote between takes.

Practical light in a dystopian street

The genre’s best-known images were lit on set. On Blade Runner (1982), many umbrellas carried on the street set had fluorescent tubes built into their shafts, providing a light source that put a glow on the carriers’ faces (source: American Cinematographer). Four decades later, the Fallout series built its Pip-Boy wrist computer as working equipment: Kyle MacLachlan said it was pre-programmed, so there was activity on it to interact with, which he called very helpful as an actor (source: GamesRadar+). Jonathan Nolan also wanted the show’s T-60 power armor built practically, and the build went to Legacy Effects (source: American Cinematographer on Fallout).

That is the case for a lit hand prop: the actor reacts to real light, and the camera records it. Our pieces have been filmed for real campaigns: Apple used one of our LED cowboy hats to showcase iPhone 13 Night mode low-light photography, and Google put our Out Past Midnight boots in a Google Lens commercial and on six-story billboards. Talk to us about your camera and lighting plan before we build.

Hero, stunt and background versions for a dystopian shoot

Piece Hero (close-up) Stunt (action) Background (BG)
Rebel leader’s rig Full lit strapwork, remote color and patterns A flexible version with the pack padded and moved clear of falls Same color on the leader’s lieutenants
Raider or militia crew Lit marks on the named crew members Softer pieces for chases and fights Matched multiples in one faction color
Wrist device or scanner Light inside, with a programmable pattern A soft double for drops and throws A steady glow for extras
Checkpoint or camp Light-up set pieces near the lens Not needed Lit trim along the barricade for the wide shot

Order a double of every hero piece for continuity and reshoots. Your stunt coordinator signs off on every stunt version.

How many pieces does a faction or crowd scene need?

Post-apocalyptic LED harness costumes: six actors in green-lit harnesses get notes in a warehouse set

Count by camera distance. Leads in close-up get a hero piece and a double each. Featured crew a few feet back get one piece each, plus a few spares for the group. Extras at the back of the crowd get background pieces in the faction color, and the wide shot reads them as one army.

Multiples are our home ground. We made Missy Elliott’s hat plus 20 matching dancer hats, and we’ve outfitted Beyoncé’s dancers on tour. A faction in one color is the same job: one look, built to one spec, set to one color by remote before every setup.

Rain, dust and night exteriors

Dystopian shoots live outside at night. For the club scene in the ruined city, our LED fringe sequin jacket has LED fringe front and back, changes color by remote or holds one solid color, has brightness control and runs 4+ hours on its 5000mAh rechargeable pack; it’s water resistant. Our programmable LED harness handles sweat, light rain and outdoor conditions, and its LEDs stay cool on the body.

Tell us about rain towers, dust and puddles in the schedule before we build, and we will tell you plainly what each piece can take. Charge every pack between setups and plan the night around 4+ hours per charge.
