What should a director plan for majorette tryouts?

Three things, in order: a prep clinic that teaches your material, a tryout that scores it and a first-night look for the line you pick. Most directors plan the first two carefully and leave the third until the season is close. Plan it now, because sizing the new line starts the day the list goes up.
Programs differ in how much they teach up front. Auburn University’s band held a free, optional audition clinic for its majorettes, dance line and flag line on February 14, 2026, two months before April auditions (source: Auburn University Marching Band). Troy University emails one bodywork routine to every majorette, color guard and dance line candidate and runs no clinic for it; candidates film it for round one (source: Troy University 2026 auxiliary auditions). At Daleville High School in Alabama, a coach teaches the majorette group routine over five clinic days before tryouts, and there is no audition fee (source: Daleville High School Auxiliaries).
Two traditions share the word majorette
| Line | What tryouts test | Published example |
|---|---|---|
| Baton majorette line | Twirling basics, multi-baton work, a solo and a group routine | Troy’s round one lists finger twirls, thumbroll flips, toss illusions and 3-baton juggles; its solo needs at least one full minute of one-baton work |
| HBCU-style dance line | Struts, turns, jumps, leaps, kicks and splits; stand choreography; a halftime piece; an interview | The Clark Atlanta University band’s Essence Dance Line weighs fundamentals, stands, interview and choreography at 20% each |
| High school majorette team | Basics, a group routine taught at clinics and an individual routine | Daleville High School asks for prior field or baton studio experience and a 45 to 90 second individual routine |
Sources: Troy University 2026 auxiliary auditions, CAU Bands: Essence Dance Line, Daleville High School Auxiliaries. Our products serve the dance side of the auxiliary: the LED fringe sequin bodysuit for majorette dance lines, and LED poms for band dance lines that perform pom numbers. On a baton line, the baton stays the star.
Run the prep clinic like a recruiting event
| When | What to lock in |
|---|---|
| 8 to 10 weeks out | Post the packet: dates, eligibility, fees, attire and music rules |
| 6 weeks out | Open registration; collect forms, fees, headshots and proof of admission |
| Clinic days | Teach fundamentals and the group routine; captains demonstrate and spot |
| Clinic finale | The current line performs under show lights for candidates and families |
| Tryout day | Basics, group routine, solo and interview, with score sheets kept on file |
| Announcement | Measure the new line and set the first night performance date |
Published packets show what to collect. Auburn required acceptance to the university before auditions, a $30 application fee and a close-up headshot, and majorette and flag candidates brought their own equipment (source: Auburn University Marching Band). Clark Atlanta’s Essence Dance Line charged a $25 audition fee and asked for a printed 8 x 10 headshot (source: CAU Bands: Essence Dance Line). UAB charged a $25 audition fee and asked for a letter of evaluation from a band director, auxiliary coordinator or studio instructor (source: UAB Bands).
The clinic finale under the lights
Turn the house lights down at the end of the clinic and let the current line perform. Candidates see what they are trying out for, families film it, and that clip recruits next year’s class. A line in our LED fringe sequin bodysuit, one color across every dancer, reads from the back row of a dark gym, and the fringe moves on every hit. If your band’s dance line performs with poms, it can answer with every pom switching color on the same count. For how lines use light at night games, see light-up majorette uniforms and HBCU dance lines.
Which dress codes will candidates see?
| Program | Attire | Hair, makeup and extras |
|---|---|---|
| Clark Atlanta University, Essence Dance Line | Black boy shorts with dance tights, a supportive black sports bra, a white tank top, dance or athletic shoes | Hair secured away from the face; clear gloss only; stud earrings only |
| Troy University auxiliaries | All black form-fitting athletic wear with black or tan jazz shoes | Hair down and curled; game-day makeup with red lipstick; earrings only |
| UAB majorettes | A twirling costume of choice, skin-tone tights, jazz shoes | Game-day-ready hair and makeup |
| Alcorn State Golden Girls (2016 notice) | Black cycling shorts, a black sports bra, gym shoes, a white T-shirt and tights | 60 to 90 seconds of music for the individual dance |

Outfitting the new line
Our LED fringe sequin bodysuit keeps the sequin-and-fringe look a majorette line is known for and adds its own light. It is a sequin bodysuit with snap closures and one layer of LED fringe from a V seam at the hips, not a skirt. Color changes by remote, so the whole line matches. Sizes run XS to 4X with two-way stretch, and the USB rechargeable pack runs 4+ hours per charge.
- Measure at the first meeting: bust, waist and hips for every dancer.
- Order spares in the two most common sizes.
- Set every remote to the same color before the line takes the field.
- Rehearse once under the lights you will perform in.
For costume details, see majorette line costumes.
Poms for the band’s dance line

Auburn, Troy and UAB all audition their auxiliary lines in the same season. If your dance line performs pom numbers, order its poms with the majorette costumes so the whole auxiliary lights up together. The Purdue Golduster Dance Team, the dance line of the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band, ordered 24 pairs of our LED poms in September 2026 and performed with them on the field. Our team rate is $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs:
| Group | Pairs | Cost at the team rate |
|---|---|---|
| Dance line of 12 | 14 | $1,680 |
| Dance line of 20 | 22 | $2,640 |
| Dance line of 30 | 33 | $3,960 |
Pair counts include spares. Email info@neoncowboys.com with your headcount, sizes, the line’s color, how many dancers carry poms and your first night performance date. We make our light-up products ourselves and will tell you plainly what fits your date. See band dance line and auxiliary clinics and our guide to college recruitment clinics for cheer and dance.

Frequently asked questions
When are majorette tryouts?
Many college lines audition in spring for the fall season. Auburn held its 2026 auditions April 10 and 11, Troy’s two rounds were set for March 14 and 28, and Clark Atlanta’s Essence Dance Line auditioned August 23, 2026.
Do majorette tryouts have a prep clinic?
Many do. Auburn’s 2026 clinic was free and optional, and Daleville High School taught its group routine over five clinic days. Troy emails its routine instead.
What do you wear to majorette tryouts?
What the packet lists, often black fitted athletic wear with tights and jazz or athletic shoes, hair secured and game-day makeup.
What sizes does the LED fringe bodysuit come in?
XS to 4X, with two-way stretch.
Can the whole line glow the same color?
Yes. Color changes by remote, so set every bodysuit to the same color before the line takes the field.
Do you offer team pricing on poms for a band dance line?
Yes. $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs, in team colors, with one remote for the whole line.
