What should a coach decide before ordering team bows?

Cheer bows for teams: light-up LED bows glowing red at the crown of a high school squad's high ponytails at a night game

Six decisions, made once, before anyone places an order:

Decision The question to settle
Who wears one Every athlete and alternate, plus two spares per style for the coach’s bag
How many styles A practice bow, a sideline bow, a competition bow, or all three
Size One size for the squad, chosen on real athletes, not from a photo
Finish Grosgrain, glitter, rhinestone, sublimated print, custom or light-up
Who pays Athlete fee, booster club or program budget
Your first date Camp, the first game or the first competition

Settle them with the athletic director or the booster president in one meeting and the order goes out in one piece. Split orders are how a squad ends up with two shades of the same red.

Which cheer bow material fits which job?

Finish What it is Where it fits
Grosgrain Ribbed ribbon; the ION jumbo cheer bow sold at Academy is grosgrain, 3 inches wide Practice, camp and the sideline, all season
Glitter Glitter-finish ribbon; Varsity suggests a gold glitter bow in September for childhood cancer awareness Theme games and awareness nights
Rhinestone Stones set on the bow; Omni Cheer lists rhinestones among its bow finishes Competition, where bows run flashier
Sublimated A printed design dyed into the ribbon; Omni Cheer sells sublimated bows Team prints and patterns
Custom Your colours, logo or names; Varsity reps offer competition bows with a school’s custom logo A program look that lasts several seasons
Light-up Ours: white bows with built-in LEDs; click the button on the bow to change the colour. See the product page Competition day, night games, lights-out openers, showcases and banquets

What size cheer bow should a team order?

Cheer suppliers describe bows by ribbon width and overall size. Two published examples:

Bow Size as published Source
Varsity’s suggested sideline bow Solid colour, 3-inch Varsity: Celebrate Bow-vember
ION Cheer Girls’ Essential Jumbo Hair Bow 7 inches by 6 inches, 3 inches wide, grosgrain Academy Sports + Outdoors: ION jumbo cheer bow
Superior Cheer & Dance bow sizes 6, 7 and 8 inches wide; 7 inches is its most popular size Superior Cheer & Dance: bow size guide
The classic cheer pony bow About 7 by 7 inches overall, tails about 5 inches, on 3-inch ribbon Common supplier standard
Our light-up cheer bow About 6.1 by 5.9 inches (15.5 by 15 cm), about 60 g Measured sample

For every size side by side, with how to measure a bow, see the cheer bow size chart.

Omni Cheer describes competition bows as “often larger and much flashier” (source: Omni Cheer: hair bows and ribbons). For bows on the mat, see competition cheer bows.

How to choose: put two sizes on your tallest and your smallest athlete, look from the top row of the stands, and order the one that reads without swamping the ponytail. Then order every bow in that size, at once. For our light-up bows, see the light-up cheer bows page.

How many bows does each athlete need?

More than one. Juab High School in Utah lists “3 sets bows” at $45 in the clothing and gear line of its 2025–26 cheerleading fee (source: Juab High School 2025–26 athletics fee schedule). Varsity makes the same case: a solid sideline bow for camp and football, a sparkle bow for competition, a patterned bow for basketball and a pink bow for October games (source: Varsity: Celebrate Bow-vember).

Bow When it’s worn Per athlete
Practice or camp bow Practice and camp 1
Sideline bow Football and basketball games 1
Competition bow Competitions, with the competition uniform 1, plus team spares
Theme or awareness bow Pink out, senior night, holiday games Optional
Light-up bow Competition day, night games, lights-out openers, showcases, banquets 1, or make it the competition bow

Keep two spares of every style in the coach’s bag. Bows get left in cars and lost at away games, and a spare from the same order keeps the line matched.

What do cheer bows cost, and who pays?

Published fee schedules show how programs handle it:

Program How bows are billed Source
Juab High School, Utah, 2025–26 Three sets of bows at $45, inside a $1,032 cheerleading clothing and gear fee that also covers uniform pieces, shoes, socks and poms Juab High School 2025–26 athletics fee schedule
Cheer Infinity Allstars, 2026–27 Uniform and bow billed together at $250, outside monthly tuition; a new hair piece is $25 for athletes who already have the uniform Cheer Infinity Allstars 2026–27 handbook
Showtime Elite Atlanta, 2024–25 Bows listed with uniform, shoes, warm-up and backpack as not included in tuition and program fees Showtime Elite Atlanta 2024–25 handbook

The pattern: the athlete’s own bows go on the athlete fee, billed up front with the uniform, so nobody chases $15 in October. Team-held items, such as spares, senior bows given as a gift and any light-up set the program keeps, sit better with the booster club or the program budget. Cost the order at your full roster plus spares, and get every quote in writing for the booster treasurer.

Should you order custom cheer bows?

Custom is worth it when the bow is part of the program’s look for several seasons. Varsity reps offer competition bows with a school’s custom logo, suggest a glitter logo on the tail of a solid bow, and personalise senior bows with the athlete’s name or graduation year (source: Varsity: Celebrate Bow-vember).

  • Logo or name on the tail, where it reads from behind.
  • Match the colour to the uniform under the lights you perform in, not on a screen.
  • One maker, one order, so the colour and finish match across the squad.
  • Senior bows with the season’s order, not in the week of senior night. See cheer senior night ideas.
  • Reorders from the same maker, quoting the original order.

Colours, names, tails and finishes, option by option: custom cheer bows for teams.

Where do light-up bows fit in a team bow order?

Cheer bows for teams: light-up LED cheer bow glowing royal blue in a dark room
A light-up cheer bow set to royal blue.

As your competition bow, your night-game bow, or both. Our light-up cheer bows are white cheer bows with built-in LEDs: click the button on the bow to change the light colour, or let it cycle through the colours. Set every bow to the same colour and the whole squad glows together. They glow in regular room lighting and under stage lights. Our light-up pom poms change colour together by remote; each bow changes with its own button. To match, every athlete clicks the bow to the pom colour before the squad goes out.

See the light-up cheer bows page for current pack sizes and team pricing. Keep a standard bow for practice and camp, and bring out the light-up set on competition day, on the mat and at awards, at night football, lights-out openers, showcases and banquets. Competition rules vary by event, so check with your event producer before using anything lit in a judged routine. See our light-up cheer bows guide.
