Majorette and drill team performance lives largely in one environment: the football field, often at night, viewed from a distance and from above. That is a genuinely demanding place to be judged. Detail that reads beautifully at arm's length can vanish entirely from the top of the stands.

Fringe is not decoration in majorette uniforms — it is a visibility tool. It exaggerates movement, so a sharp arm motion reads as a whole shape rather than a thin line. It is the same reason fringe recurs across performance costume generally.
The limitation is the same as every other reflective material: fringe only reads while light is hitting it. Under field lights it works. During a darkened halftime feature, it doesn't.
