Dance Poms: What Competitive Dance & Pom Teams Use

Pom is a competitive division, not a prop. What Pom routines demand of the equipment, why squad uniformity is scored, and where LED poms actually fit.

In competitive dance, Pom is a division — not just an object. Pom routines are scored on visual precision, synchronisation and sharpness, which makes the poms themselves scoring equipment rather than decoration. Teams competing in Pom need 6-inch performance poms, a secure baton handle that survives fast arm work and hard stops, and absolute uniformity across the squad. LED poms are the newest option, used mainly for night performances, showcases and halftime rather than day competition.

Pom is a division, not a prop

People outside competitive dance often miss this. Alongside Jazz, Hip Hop, Kick and Lyrical, Pom is its own competitive category — and it is judged on a specific set of things: visual precision, clean angles, synchronisation across the squad, and sharpness of motion.

That changes what the equipment has to do. In a Pom routine the poms trace every line the judges are scoring. A pom that droops, sheds, slips in the hand, or looks different from the dancer next to you is not a cosmetic problem — it costs visual score.

What Pom routines demand of the equipment

  • Uniformity across the whole squad. Mismatched fullness or colour between poms reads instantly from the judges' table. Order the full squad's poms together, from the same run.
  • Grip through sharp stops. Pom is full of hard hits and freezes. A handle that shifts mid-motion changes your line.
  • Volume that holds. Streamers that flatten out over a season stop reading as clean shapes.
  • Weight balance. Heavier poms fatigue arms across a full competition day of warm-ups, prelims and finals.

Sizing and handles for dance teams

6 inches is the standard performance size for both cheer and dance. On handles, a baton style is the norm for Pom because it stays put through fast arm work; strap handles are more common in youth programmes. A double-ended baton balances in the hand, which matters across a long routine.

Drill teams and majorette lines

Drill team and majorette traditions have their own vocabulary and their own relationship to poms — often alongside batons, and frequently with fringe as a core part of the uniform's visual language. The performance requirements overlap heavily with Pom: precision, uniformity, and equipment that reads from a distance under stadium lighting.

Where LED poms fit in competitive dance

Honestly: not in daytime competition. A gym with the lights on does not need emitted light, and most competition formats have no reason for it.

Where they change things is everywhere else a dance team performs — night football games, halftime, pep rallies in a darkened gym, showcases, exhibition sets, and recital finales. Those are the moments where a traditional pom stops reading entirely, because plastic and metallic poms reflect light rather than emitting it.

The other thing a remote gives a dance team is colour changes inside a routine. One set can run team colours for the opener, shift for a feature section, and change again for the finale — visual variety you would otherwise need multiple sets of poms to achieve.

Most light-up poms on the market put a single LED in the plastic handle, so the pom itself stays dark. Ours build the LEDs into the pom, so every streamer glows in the colour you select.
