Which student section themes work at night?
Pick the theme by how it reads after dark, because the biggest theme games are usually night games.

What can a student council copy from the big themes?
Two Penn State traditions show how it works at scale.
- The White Out started with students. In 2004 over 20,000 students took part; it was cemented in 2005, is traditionally played at night in prime time, and the dress code was later extended from the student section to every spectator (source: Wikipedia: White Out (Penn State)).
- The Stripe Out ran on a map. For Penn State’s first Stripe Out, an 8 p.m. game against Rutgers on September 19, 2015, every section was assigned blue or white, fans checked their colour online, and students wore white (source: Penn State Athletics).
The lessons scale down to any school: start with the students, publish exactly what to wear and where, and put the theme on a night game.
How do you make a blackout actually show up?
A blackout asks a whole section to wear the one colour that disappears after dark. It looks dramatic on a broadcast and almost invisible from the field. Fix it with one planned light moment:
- Hand out light-up face stickers at the student gate.
- Agree one cue with the announcer: a kickoff, a big third down or the start of the fourth quarter.
- Students switch them on together; they flash, blink or twinkle.
- The squad switches its poms to the school colour on the same cue.
Our stickers run on a CR2032 coin battery. Hand them to adults and older students, keep spares and used batteries away from young children, and follow the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s coin-battery guidance (source: U.S. CPSC). They are made for fans, guests and performers off the competition floor, not for athletes in a USASF cheer routine.
What should the squad in front of the section carry?
The cheer squad is the section’s cue. Light-up poms switch to the theme by remote and back to school colours for the next game:
