The most common student section themes are blackout, whiteout, neon or glow night, stripe out, colour out, throwback and tropical. For night games the choice matters more than people expect: a blackout asks an entire stadium to wear the one colour that disappears under stadium lighting, while whiteout and neon read strongly. If your theme night is built around darkness — blackout, glow night or a blacklight pep rally — the only things that reliably show up are items that emit light rather than reflect it.
The themes teams actually run
- Blackout — the whole section wears black. Dramatic and intimidating on camera, and the hardest theme to actually see at a night game.
- Whiteout — the most visually reliable theme under stadium lights. White throws back every bit of light in the building.
- Neon / glow night — the theme built specifically around the dark.
- Stripe out — alternating colours by seating section; strongest from the opposite side and on broadcast.
- Colour out — a single school colour, or a cause colour such as a pink out for awareness games.
- Throwback / decades — fun in the stands, weak as a visual block.
- Tropical / beach — good energy, better for day games.
The blackout problem nobody plans for
Here is the irony of a blackout night game: you are asking twenty thousand people to wear the single colour that vanishes after dark.
It works in photos because cameras expose for the field and the stands go dramatically dark. It works far less well for the people whose job is to be seen from that field — your cheer squad, your dance team, your drill line. Black uniforms, black poms and black signage against a black crowd give the performers nothing to read against.
That is exactly why blackout games have become the most common reason teams ask us about lighting. A blackout is the one night where emitted light is not a nice extra — it is the only thing visible.
Which themes read under stadium lights

Blacklight pep rallies and glow nights
Indoor glow events work differently again. A blacklight pep rally depends on the venue actually having UV lighting, and on people wearing UV-reactive materials — white and fluorescent colours. If the blacklights are weak, or someone is standing outside their throw, the effect simply does not happen.
Anything that produces its own light works regardless of whether the venue's blacklights are any good. That is the practical difference between planning around a venue's lighting and bringing your own.
