What futuristic costumes and cyberpunk props can we build?

Cyberpunk LED wardrobe on a rainy night-market set: actors in black jackets wear glowing eye stickers

Cyberpunk lives on the street at night: wet pavement, haze, signs and people wearing their tech. For costume designers, prop masters and art departments, we design and build:

  • Futuristic costumes for leads: one-off LED wardrobe built around the character.
  • Street-crowd multiples: our jackets, harnesses and face pieces in matched custom colors for background players.
  • Face tech: light-up face pieces that read as wearable tech in a medium shot.
  • Cyberpunk props from scratch: glowing handsets, weapons, umbrellas and devices.
  • Light-up set pieces for a market stall, a club or a corporate lobby.

We sell what we build, and every custom piece is quoted. Send us your shoot date and we will tell you plainly what fits.

Blade Runner and the lit hand prop

The lit umbrellas of Blade Runner are still the reference for a rainy future street. American Cinematographer reported in 1982 that many of the umbrellas carried had fluorescent tubes in their shafts, a light source that put a glow on the carriers’ faces, and that cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth used water and reflective surfaces for uplight, with hard backlight and smoke behind (source: American Cinematographer).

A lit prop does two jobs at once: it tells the audience this is the future, and it lights the actor. We did not work on Blade Runner. We build the same idea with LEDs inside the prop, rechargeable packs hidden in the handle or the costume, and color by remote, so the glow on a face can shift with the scene.

Street, club and tower: scenes and the pieces that fit

Scene Piece Light behavior
Rain-soaked night market LED fringe jackets for the crowd One solid color per extra, or slow color fades
Hacker or fixer close-up Light-up face stickers Blink and twinkle around the eyes; there is no solid mode
Club in the megacity LED harnesses over mesh Strobe and fast color change
Gang or faction on the street Matched harnesses for each group One color per faction, held for every take
Chase down an alley Stunt versions of the hand props A hard color change on the hit
Hero device insert A custom hand prop A programmed pattern for the close-up

Our fringe jacket and our face stickers are both water resistant. If your scene uses rain towers, tell us in the brief so we can plan around them.

Matched multiples for a crowd of extras

Futuristic LED wardrobe: six dancers in purple and blue light-up harnesses rehearse on a neon club set

A future city reads as real when the background is lit too. We make multiples of our pieces in custom colors for ensembles: for Missy Elliott we made her hat plus 20 matching dancer hats, and we have outfitted Beyoncé’s dancers on tour.

For a crowd, BG players get the same color and light behavior as the leads at a simpler build, and every copy is set the same way so continuity holds across takes. Face stickers are the simplest way to light a whole crowd: they are reusable, run about 4+ hours on one CR2032 coin battery and stay cool on the skin. Hand them to adult and older-teen cast, and keep spare and used coin batteries away from young children.

Why art departments bring a fashion house in

Neon Cowboys is a designer-led light-up fashion house founded in 2014 by Asia Hall, a computer science graduate and the daughter of couturier Kevan Hall. Cyberpunk is where those two worlds meet: clothing with technology worn on the outside.

Our pieces have been filmed for brands that care about how light looks on camera. An LED cowboy hat of ours showcased iPhone 13 low-light night photography for Apple, Google put our Out Past Midnight boots in a Google Lens commercial and on six-story billboards, and Adobe featured us in a 2021 campaign that aired on Hulu. For artists we have made custom light-up sunglasses for Kim Petras, LED glasses for Doja Cat and a custom LED belt buckle for Doechii: the kind of small, lit detail a cyberpunk close-up runs on.

LED Harness by Neon Cowboys, a man wearing a red glowing light up harness over a black mesh top at an outdoor music festival at sunset, this neon harness and led harness for men doubles as go-go dancer, drag, cabaret and rave performer stagewear for EDC, Coachella, Pride and club night, Neon Cowboys

How do we build the light into a futuristic piece?

  • LEDs built into the piece, along seams, straps and edges, not taped on afterward.
  • Color by remote: our programmable harness gives 256+ color combinations and effects, including fade and strobe, and our jacket’s remote adds brightness control.
  • Programmable patterns for custom hand props and set pieces, set to your scene.
  • Rechargeable packs hidden in the costume or the prop; the jacket runs 4+ hours on its included 5000mAh power bank.
  • EL wire for a clean single-color line; our Out Past Midnight boots are EL wire.

Every camera and lighting setup is different, so talk to us about your camera and lighting plan before the design is locked.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a costume look futuristic on camera?

Light that belongs to the costume: lines along the seams, lit face pieces and a glowing device in the hand. We build the LEDs into the piece, with color by remote, so it reads on a dark, wet street set.

Can you build cyberpunk props from scratch?

Yes. Glowing handsets, weapons, umbrellas and devices, in hero, stunt and BG versions. Every build is quoted.

Is your LED fringe jacket water resistant?

Yes, it is water resistant. If your scene uses rain towers, tell us in the brief so we can plan around them.

How were the umbrellas in Blade Runner lit?

American Cinematographer reported in 1982 that many of them had fluorescent tubes in their shafts, which put a glow on the carriers’ faces.

Can you light a whole crowd of extras?

Yes. We make multiples of our pieces in custom colors, and our face stickers light a crowd quickly. Stickers are for adult and older-teen cast.

How long does a custom futuristic build take?

Send us your shoot date and we will tell you plainly what fits. Every build is quoted.
