For high school seniors heading to a college prep clinic: register the day it opens, since spots are capped by session. Then practice sharp motions at home with a pair of our LED pom poms, 7 oz each, with metallic streamers and LEDs built into the pom. A practice pair is on the product page.

How does a high school senior get a spot at a college prep clinic?

College cheer prep clinic: squad in maroon and white raises crimson LED pom poms on blue mats as adult attendees film

Register the day registration opens, and pay at sign-up. Prep clinics are capped, and the caps are real:

  • UConn caps space for safety, keeps no waitlist, takes same-day registration only if spots remain, and requires payment at sign-up (source: UConn Spirit: College Prep/Recruitment Clinic).
  • Texas Tech says cheer clinic registration may close when a clinic reaches capacity, and it posts registration through its social media page (source: Texas Tech Spirit Clinics).

Some programs with both an all-girl and a coed squad cap each session separately. This fall, one program posted a prep clinic for current high school seniors and college students only, with separate caps for coed and all-girl spots, first come, first served. Another Division I program ran online registration only, with a deadline and no walk-ups. Follow the program’s social accounts so you see the post the day it goes up.

Coed, all-girl and recruitment sessions compared

Pick the session that matches how you stunt now and the squad you want to join:

Session Who it is for What it covers
Coed stunt session Flyers and bases working partner stunts Coed stunting; some programs invite all-girl flyers with no coed experience
All-girl session All-girl flyers, bases and backspots Group stunting; Texas Tech lists all-girl and small coed stunting as topics
College prep and recruitment session Juniors, seniors and college students Motions, jumps, stunts and tumbling at college level
Grade-split prep clinic Grades 9–12, college students and transfers Fundamentals, grouped by grade, not tumbling level

Some programs price each session separately with a lower price for both. If you are a flyer who can work both styles, the bundle gets you in front of both coaching staffs in one day.

What to wear and bring as a senior

Some programs color-code by class, which makes seniors easy to spot in the room. UConn asks seniors and current college students to wear red, with everyone else in navy or white (source: UConn Spirit: High School/College Prep Clinics). Texas State puts seniors and college transfers in maroon, juniors in black and underclassmen in white (source: Texas State Cheer Clinics).

  • No jewelry: at UConn, athletes who cannot remove it do not stunt.
  • A signed waiver, where the program requires one (Texas State does).
  • Water and a snack.
  • Hair the way the posted dress code says, with a bow only if the program lists one.

Follow the host program’s dress code and material to the letter. More in what to wear to cheer tryouts.

Why a prep clinic can shorten your tryout

For seniors, the clinic is often the first cut. UConn says select seniors and current or potential college students may receive a “Fast Pass” that advances them to the second round of tryouts (source: UConn Spirit: College Prep/Recruitment Clinic). Texas Tech says some clinics offer a video bypass, which lets an athlete skip the video portion of tryouts, though it does not guarantee a spot (source: Texas Tech Cheer clinics). At Texas State, anyone who wants to sign onto the team must attend an in-person clinic or practice (source: Texas State Cheer Clinics).

Go to the clinic of the program you want most. If it is far, compare it with camp and other options in cheer camp vs cheer clinic.

What should a senior practice before the clinic?

College cheer prep: squad in green seen from behind, green light-up bows on high ponytails and LED pom poms at a night game

Prep clinics cover motions, jumps, stunts and tumbling at college level. Motions are the part you can sharpen alone in your room, every day.

Practice with a real pair of poms. Ours weigh 7 oz each, with full metallic streamers that work as a regular pom in daylight. The LEDs are built into the pom, so a night video shows every motion as a clean line of light: you see whether your high V is level and your punches stop sharp. They are rechargeable, about 3 to 4 hours per charge. Order a practice pair from the LED pom poms page.

Your last high school season still has a senior night. If your squad wears bows at night games, ask your coach about our light-up cheer bows: white bows with built-in LEDs and a button on each bow to change the color, with a hair-tie option. See light-up cheer bows for teams.

Senior night and the team rate

If your squad wants the whole line glowing for senior night, the team rate is $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs, and one remote changes every pom together. Send your coach the team order page or the guide to LED pom poms for college cheer and dance teams. Your coach can email info@neoncowboys.com with the roster, colors and game date, and we will tell them plainly what fits.

Frequently asked questions

Who can attend a college cheer prep clinic?

Mostly high school juniors, seniors and college students. UConn’s recruitment clinic was open to juniors, seniors, current college students and potential transfers; Texas Tech’s college prep clinics are generally for juniors through college age.

How do coed and all-girl caps work?

Programs that run both set a cap for each session, and registration closes when each one fills. Register for the session that matches how you stunt, and ask the program if you are unsure.

Can I sign up at the door?

Do not count on it. UConn takes same-day registration only if spots remain and keeps no waitlist, and some programs take online registration only, with a deadline.

What is a Fast Pass or a video bypass?

A tryout shortcut. UConn’s Fast Pass advances select seniors and college students to the second round; Texas Tech’s video bypass skips the video portion but does not guarantee a spot.

Should I bring light-up poms or bows to a clinic?

Follow the dress code and material the host program posts. Our poms and bows are for practice at home and your own squad’s night games.

How heavy are your poms, and how long do they last per charge?

7 oz per pom, and about 3 to 4 hours per charge; white and rainbow drain the battery faster.
