Why do band directors choose light-up poms for a pom line?

The pom line is the one band unit whose equipment has to read as a single block of colour from the stands, at every sport the band plays, and one matched set that changes colour by remote does that job all year. The pom line (many programs write pomline, and some say pom squad) is the band’s pom and dance unit, one of its auxiliary units next to the drumline, the color guard and the twirlers. The Pride of Arizona, the University of Arizona’s marching and pep band, has about 265 members and three auxiliary units beside its drumline (source: Wikipedia: The Pride of Arizona):

Unit What it carries
Drumline Snares, tenor drums, bass drums and cymbals (battery only)
Color guard Flags, rifles and other equipment
Twirling team Batons
Pom line Poms, with dance

Its Arizona Pomline is the university’s official dance team: 24 dancers, and part of the Pride of Arizona marching and pep bands for more than 48 years (source: Arizona Pomline). A 24-dancer line with two spares is a 26-pair order.

What does a pom line’s season look like across every sport?

A pom line’s calendar follows the band from the stadium to the arena to the ballpark. The Arizona Pomline performs sideline routines and halftime shows at all home football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball games, and travels to postseason football games and to conference and NCAA basketball tournaments (source: Arizona Pomline). At Northwestern State University in Louisiana, the Purple Pizzazz Pom Line has performed since 1969 at home football and basketball games and conference baseball games, and its members enroll in the varsity dance and pep band classes (source: Northwestern State University spirit groups).

Stretch of the season Where the line performs What the poms have to do
Football Sidelines and halftime with the marching band Read across a field at night and get through a rainy game
Basketball Sideline routines and halftime with the pep band Stay matched under arena light and in lights-down moments
Baseball Home games, often in daylight Look like good metallic poms when the light isn’t the point
Postseason Postseason football and conference and NCAA basketball tournaments Pack, charge and travel with the band

Neither university is affiliated with Neon Cowboys; we cite them as public examples of how a pom line’s year runs.

Why does colour by remote matter for a pom line?

Metallic poms lock a line into one colour for the year. A pom line plays homecoming, senior night, theme nights and a tournament run, all on the same set. Light-up poms change colour by remote, so the whole line switches together:

  • Band colours for every regular game.
  • A theme colour for a cause night or a white-out, then back to band colours at the next game.
  • Split sets: the raised pom one colour and the low pom another, so a two-colour school reads in both.
  • A colour change on a music hit in the halftime show, cued with the band’s arranger.

One remote runs every pair at once, with a range of about 65 to 80 feet on line of sight. On a football field, the person holding it stays within that distance of the line, on the near sideline or on the field behind the band, not in the press box. Rehearse the cue at band camp so the change lands on the count. See choosing team pom colours.

What should pom line uniforms do next to light-up poms?

Pom line uniforms have a long season to get through: a hot August sideline, a cold November halftime, a basketball court and a ballpark. A few rules keep the uniform working with lit poms:

  • Keep the uniform plain in band colours, so the poms carry the colour change.
  • Plan a cold-weather layer in the same colours for late-season football and travel.
  • Add one lit look for a featured halftime. Our LED fringe bodysuit is a sequin bodysuit with one layer of LED fringe from a V seam at the hips, colour by remote, in sizes XS to 4X with two-way stretch, so one style fits the whole line.

Put the poms and any lit uniform on the same colour plan, so the line reads as one unit from the stands.

Will light-up poms hold up to a full band season?

A pom line puts more hours on its poms than a squad that only works football. These are the points that matter over a full season:

Question Our light-up poms
Weight About 7 oz each, light enough for long sideline routines
Power Rechargeable lithium-ion packs that charge by USB-C, like a phone; no AAA packs to replace
Run time About 2 to 4 hours a charge, depending on colour and mode; switch off between halftime and the fourth quarter
Light Many diodes built into the pom itself, not a single light in the handle
Handle A double-ended baton handle, with the battery pack on the handle and out of the way
Weather Water-resistant for a rainy halftime; not for soaking

For postseason travel, keep the chargers with an adult. Under FAA rules, spare lithium-ion batteries and power banks fly in carry-on bags only, and airlines can set stricter limits, so check with the carrier before the trip (source: FAA PackSafe: lithium batteries).

How many pairs should a pom line order?

Order one pair per dancer, then add spares for a dancer who joins mid-season, an alternate who travels, or a pom on the charger. At our team rate of $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs:

Group Pairs Cost at the team rate
High school pom line of 12 14 $1,680
Pom line of 16 18 $2,160
Pom line of 20 22 $2,640
University pom line of 24 26 $3,120

Pair counts include two spares. The Purdue Golduster Dance Team, the dance line of the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band, ordered 24 pairs of our light-up poms in September 2026 and has performed with them on the field.

When should a band director order for the season?

When What to lock in
After spring auditions Set the roster and the pair count; request a quote with your first home game date
Summer band camp Rehearse with the poms and the remote cue inside the halftime show
First home football game Band colours; one adult owns the charging
Basketball season Set the colour plan for pep band games and any theme nights
Postseason Pack chargers and spares for travel

At Northwestern State, Pom Line tryouts for 2027 are on May 15 (source: Northwestern State University spirit groups). Wherever your auditions fall, the pair count is known once the roster is set. Send us your first game date and we will tell you plainly what fits.

Who signs off on a pom line order?

Line Who usually pays Notes
Light-up poms for the line Athletic band budget, or the pom line’s own fundraising One set covers every sport
Spare pairs The same order Two pairs, held by the pom line director
Lit uniform pieces Band budget or boosters Quoted with the poms
Travel kit Band travel budget Chargers and spares for postseason trips
  • Director of athletic bands: owns the budget and the halftime show, and signs the purchase order.
  • Pom line director or coach: the choreography, the colour plan and the pair count.
  • Band office or business manager: quotes, the purchase order and vendor paperwork.
  • Athletics or game operations: any lights-down moment in the stadium or arena.
  • A manager on the sideline: holds the remote where the whole line is in sight.

How do you request a quote for a pom line?

Email or DM us with the size of your pom line, your band colours, your first home game date and any postseason dates. We make our light-up products ourselves and will tell you plainly what fits your date. See team orders for how a group order works.
