What to Wear to Mardi Gras: The Complete Attire Guide

Purple, green and gold — and four completely different dress codes. Day parades, night parades, krewe balls and Fat Tuesday all need different answers.

Mardi Gras attire follows the Carnival colours — purple for justice, green for faith, gold for power — and what you wear depends entirely on which event you are attending. Day parades are casual and layered. Night parades reward anything that lights up, because the floats are lit and the crowd is not. Krewe balls are formal, frequently white tie or black tie, and often masked. Carnival season runs from Twelfth Night on January 6 through Fat Tuesday.

The colours, and why they are those colours

Purple, green and gold are not arbitrary. The assignment traditionally credited to the Rex organisation in the 1890s gives purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power. Essentially every Mardi Gras look works from that palette, which is why the season is so visually consistent across a whole city.

Practically, this means one outfit decision is made for you. What is left is the harder question: which Mardi Gras are you dressing for?

Four different events, four different dress codes

Event What it actually is What to wear
Day parade Hours outdoors, standing, often cold and often wet Layers, comfortable shoes, purple/green/gold, something that survives weather
Night parade Lit floats, dark crowd, huge crowds Anything that produces its own light — this is the one night it genuinely matters
Krewe ball A formal ball, frequently white tie or black tie, often masked Gown or formalwear, mask, statement piece
Fat Tuesday, on the street All day, all weather, enormous crowds Costume you can actually wear for twelve hours

Night parades are the whole opportunity

Here is the thing most guides miss. At a night parade the floats are brilliantly lit and the crowd is in the dark. Everyone on the street is wearing purple, green and gold that nobody can see, competing for the attention of riders who are looking down into a wall of shadow.

Anything that emits its own light — rather than reflecting it — reads instantly in that environment. Sequins, metallics and beads all depend on a light source; after sundown on a parade route there often isn't one pointed at you.

Masking

Masking is central to Carnival, and for float riders it is traditionally required. Beyond the floats, masks remain a normal part of Mardi Gras dressing, particularly at balls and masquerades.

Pieces that work across the season

Colour-changing pieces are unusually well suited to Carnival for one practical reason: purple, green and gold are all in the palette. One piece covers the whole colour scheme, and shifts between them, rather than committing to a single colour for the season.

Krewes, groups and bulk

Krewes, walking clubs, dance troupes and marching groups order together so the whole group reads as one unit on the route. Made-to-order pieces can be produced in your krewe's colours, and group pricing improves with quantity — but production takes time, so plan from Twelfth Night rather than from February.

An American tradition, from an American maker

Mardi Gras as it exists in the United States — the parades, the second lines, the music, the marching traditions — was shaped enormously by Black New Orleans. We are a Black- and Chinese-American woman-owned brand that designs and makes its own pieces in the USA.
