Mardi Gras outfits for men run from a simple purple, green and gold layer over normal clothes at a day parade, to full costume on Fat Tuesday, to white tie or black tie at a krewe ball. The practical priorities are footwear you can stand in for hours, layers for February weather, and — for night parades — something that produces its own light, since the floats are lit and the crowd is in the dark.
The three levels
- Minimal — normal clothes plus the colours: a jacket, hat or accessory in purple, green or gold. Entirely acceptable at any day parade.
- Committed — a full look built around the palette, which is the norm on Fat Tuesday and at night parades.

- Shoes. Hours standing on uneven street.
- Layers. It is February, and parades run in the rain.
- Visibility after dark. Night parades are where most men's outfits quietly stop working.
