Masquerade is the highest-participation formal theme there is, because the entire costume requirement is one mask a guest brings themselves. It works in any venue, needs almost no decoration beyond lighting, and photographs well because masks give everybody something to do with their hands and their face. Deep jewel colours, low light and a few gold accents will carry the whole room.
Why it gets the best turnout
Every other formal theme asks people to buy something they will wear once. Masquerade asks for a mask, which costs a few dollars, arrives in two days, and most students genuinely enjoy choosing.
- No one can get it wrong. Any mask works. That removes the anxiety that kills participation in themes with a right answer.
- It works on top of formalwear. Guests keep the gown or suit they already planned.
- It fixes awkward photos. People who hate being photographed relax behind a mask.
The palette and the lighting

Masquerade lives in a narrow colour range and gets worse the further you stray: deep purple, emerald, burgundy, midnight blue and black, with gold as the only metallic. Silver reads as a winter theme, pastels read as a baby shower.
Lighting does nearly all the work. Uplight the walls in two of your jewel colours, keep the overheads almost off, and put candles on the tables. In a dark room a mask catches light at the brow and cheekbone, which is exactly the effect you want.
The one thing that fails here: metallic and sequinned decoration. In a room this dark there is no light for it to reflect, so it photographs grey. Anything meant to read after the lights go down has to produce its own light.
Decoration, in priority order
- Uplighting in two jewel tones. Rentable, and it transforms the room.
- Candles on every table — battery ones if the venue bans flame, which most do.
- A mask wall or spare mask basket at the entrance for anyone who forgot. This single item raises participation more than anything else.
- One good photo backdrop — dark drape, gold frame, a couple of oversized masks.
- Feathers, gold ribbon and dark linen at table level.
Skip printed signage. In this lighting nobody will read it.
Masquerade for different events
- Homecoming or winter formal: the default. Works in a gym or a hall.
- A chapter or organisation formal: scales down well to a smaller venue, where candles and uplight matter even more.
- A fundraiser or gala: the mask gives a reason for an auction item and a photo station.
- Halloween-adjacent events: masquerade reads as elegant rather than costume, which suits a formal in late October.
