Great Gatsby is the theme that looks most expensive for the least money, because art deco is built from geometry, black and gold, and repetition — all of which are cheap. The look is 1920s: fringe, feathers, pearls, geometric shapes, candelabra and warm gold light. It works best in a venue with some existing architectural character, and it fails when it drifts into generic gold party supplies with no deco shapes in them.
What actually makes it read as deco
Four elements. Get these and the theme lands; miss them and it becomes a gold-coloured party.
- Geometry. Chevrons, sunbursts, fans, stepped shapes, repeating arches. Deco is a pattern language first and a colour scheme second.
- Black and gold, with cream. Not gold alone. The black is what makes the gold read as deco rather than as a birthday.
- Height. Tall centrepieces, candelabra, feather plumes, columns. Deco is vertical.
- Warm light. Amber and gold, never cool white. Edison-style bulbs if you can get them.
Decorating it cheaply

This theme rewards repetition over expense. Twenty identical cheap gold items arranged symmetrically read as deliberate; five expensive mismatched ones read as a jumble.
- One deco backdrop for photos — a black panel with a gold sunburst or fan is a weekend of cardboard and spray paint.
- Warm uplighting on the walls. Amber, low.
- Tall centrepieces — candelabra or feather plumes in simple vases. Height matters more than detail.
- Black linen with gold runners, pearl strands, scattered gold confetti in geometric shapes.
- A champagne tower prop (empty coupes, no liquid) as a second photo moment.
What guests actually wear
The dress code is the reason this theme is fun, and the reason to publish it early. Flapper-style fringe dresses, drop waists, beaded or sequinned shifts, long pearl strands, feathered or beaded headbands, T-strap shoes. For men: dark suits, waistcoats, suspenders, bow ties, the occasional flat cap.
Give people six to eight weeks' notice. Fringe dresses need ordering, and half the appeal of this theme is that guests dress to it.
Worth knowing: a fringe silhouette and a dark room are a difficult combination. Beading and sequins only sparkle when there is light to catch, and a deco room is deliberately dim and warm. Fringe that produces its own light solves that — it keeps the exact 1920s shape while actually being visible in the photographs.
Where it works and where it doesn't
- Works: hotel ballrooms with cornicing or columns, old theatres, libraries, anywhere with existing architectural detail to lean on.
- Works: formals, galas, fundraisers, milestone birthdays, New Year's Eve.
- Struggles: a bare school gym with a high flat ceiling. Deco needs vertical detail, and a gym gives you none — you would be building it from scratch.
- Fails: any version with no black and no geometry. Gold balloons alone are not Gatsby.
