Iridescent Pom Poms vs LED Pom Poms: Which One Actually Lights Up?

Iridescent and holographic poms reflect light. LED poms make their own. Here is the honest difference on a dark field — and why a reflective finish decides your look for you.

Iridescent and holographic pom poms do not produce light — they reflect it. The oil-slick shimmer you see in photos comes from stadium floodlights or a camera flash bouncing off the film, so the moment the lights drop, an iridescent pom goes as dark as any other pom. LED pom poms emit their own light from diodes built into the streamers, in a colour you choose, for as long as the battery lasts. If you want shimmer in daylight, iridescent is the finish. If you need to be seen after dark, you need something that makes its own light.

Iridescent, holographic and LED: what each one actually does

These three words get used as if they were the same product category. They are three different things.

How it works In a dark stadium
Iridescent / AB A clear film that splits reflected light into shifting pink, lilac and teal Nothing. It has no light of its own, and the colour shift needs a light source to split
Holographic / metallic A mirrored surface that bounces existing light back at you Nothing. Brilliant under floodlights, invisible once they go down
LED Diodes in the streamers producing their own light Visible from the top row. Colour is whatever you set it to

None of this makes iridescent a bad product. It is a genuinely beautiful daytime finish. The mistake is buying it for a night game, a blackout, or a dim arena and expecting it to read from the stands.

Iridescent is a finish, not a team colour

One set of Neon Cowboys LED pom poms shown in four different colours, changed from a handheld remote.

This is the part teams tend to work out late. Iridescent film shifts through pale pink, lilac, silver and teal on its own schedule, depending on the angle and the light hitting it. You do not get to pick which of those a camera catches.

So a squad in iridescent poms looks like a squad in iridescent poms. It is a pretty effect and it is the same pretty effect for everyone who buys it — your colours are not in it anywhere. For a programme that spends real money keeping uniforms, bows and warmups on-palette, that is a strange place to give up control.

The short version: with a reflective finish, the look picks you. With LEDs, you pick the look. Set them to your primary for the walk-out, your secondary for the halftime routine, pink for a pink-out, white for a whiteout — same poms, from a remote.

What squads run into after lighting their own poms

Plenty of teams have tried wiring a string of fairy lights into a set of iridescent poms. It is a reasonable instinct and the first one usually looks good on a phone. The problems show up at squad scale, not on the prototype:

  • A battery pack per arm. Every pom needs its own cells, which means a box and a lead hanging off each wrist through a full routine.
  • Disposable batteries. AAAs go flat partway through a long night, and somebody has to buy and swap them for the whole squad, every event.
  • Loose wire. A lead between the pom and the pack is something to catch, tug and snap during motions.
  • White light only. Standard fairy lights are one colour. Scattered through clear iridescent film they come out as a pale wash, not as your team colour.
  • They will not match. Twenty hand-built poms are twenty slightly different brightnesses and densities. In a pom division where uniformity is scored, a line that does not match is a visible deduction.
  • No way to change it. Whatever you built is what you have, for every theme night, all season.

We are not going to walk you through building one. We would rather be honest about why the ones we build are made the way they are.

Can you get the iridescent look with real LEDs?

Ordinary cheer pom pom with a single LED in the plastic handle next to a Neon Cowboys LED pom pom lit across every streamer.

Yes. AB iridescent streamers are available from us as a custom build — email us and we will quote it — and because the light comes from diodes rather than from the film, you get the shimmer and a colour you control.

Worth knowing before you compare quotes: most things sold as "LED pom poms" are a single LED inside the plastic handle. The handle lights up and the pom stays dark, which reads as one small dot from the stands. Ours put the diodes into the pom itself, along the streamers and out to the tips, so the whole pom is lit. The pack is rechargeable and built into the handle, so there is no box on your wrist and no wire to catch.

So which should a team buy?

  • Daytime, outdoor, well-lit gym: metallic or iridescent is fine, and cheaper. Buy it in your colours.
  • Night games, blackouts, arena routines, anything on camera after dark: you need emitted light. Reflective finishes have nothing to work with.
  • A programme that runs themed nights: one remote-controlled set covers every theme instead of buying poms per night.
