Technique Tuesday Pom Drills: Cheer Motions, Sharp Stops and Clean Levels That Read on Camera

For cheer and dance coaches who post technique content: four pom drills, how to film them in a gym or on a night field, and why the team’s poms decide how the clip reads.

For coaches who post Technique Tuesday drills: our LED pom poms turn every cheer motion into a line of light on a phone camera, and one remote changes the whole team’s color on the count, so a clean level change reads clean. Team pricing is $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs.

Which pom drills should a program film for Technique Tuesday?

Technique Tuesday pom drill: eight dancers in blue hit a three-level pose with blue LED pom poms on a dark stadium track

Programs post technique clips because prospects and parents watch them, and the best drills show cheer motions hitting together. Varsity Spirit’s at-home technique sheet opens the week with a pom strength and placement drill in four eight-counts (source: Varsity Spirit: a dancer’s at-home technique training):

Eight-count What it trains What the camera shows
High V, clean, T, clean, low V, clean, T, clean (swinging arms) Placement through the core motions Every arm landing at the same angle, or not
Half T, high V, half T, T, half T, low V, half T, T (breaking arms) Bent-arm control Elbows at one height down the line
Circle right arm out, circle left arm out, daggers, candlesticks, daggers, touchdown Changing planes on the count A clean stop after each circle
Clean, right diagonal, clean, left diagonal, clean, right L, left L, clean Diagonals and L motions Lines that match across the team

Varsity’s note on the drill: repeat it for endurance and strength, vary the tempo, and keep the placement.

Sharp stops come from the arm, not the wrist

Coaches quoted in Dance Spirit’s Pom 101 give the rules a drill clip should show (source: Dance Spirit: Pom 101). Shannon Fry of the University of Missouri Golden Girls: to stop sharply in a position, dancers tighten their arms, not their wrists, because a tight wrist breaks the line. Amanda Gaines of the University of Minnesota Dance Team: send the energy out through the fingertips instead of stopping at the wrist, and build arm strength with a one-minute plank, push-ups, triceps dips and biceps curls, because pom is all about the visuals. One coach’s sample count: high V on 1, hold 2 and 3, half T on 4, hold 5, down on 6, daggers on 7, T on 8, taught slowly with closed fists before the poms come out, then sped up.

Film that progression: fists first, then poms, then full tempo. It shows prospects how your program teaches, which is the point of the post.

Clean levels and level changes

A level change splits the team into heights and hits on one count. A 2022–23 USA college pom scoresheet lists level changes, opposition and group work among a routine’s visual effects, and grades pom technique on control, placement, sharpness and precision (source: USA College Pom scoresheet (2022–23)). That vocabulary is what a technique clip is trying to show.

  • Three-level hit: the front row kneels in a low V, the middle row stands in a T and the back row hits a high V, all on the same count.
  • Ripple: the high V travels down the line one count per dancer, then the whole line snaps back together on 8.
  • Opposition: alternate dancers hit a high V and a low V, then switch.

Competition rules vary by event, so check with your event producer before using anything lit in a judged routine.

Why do the team’s poms matter on camera?

A phone in a bright gym exposes for the floor, and metallic streamers flash and blur. Turn the lights down to one wash and lit poms change the picture: every pom becomes a shape of light, so a late arm or a low V at the wrong height shows at once. That makes the clip better for teaching and better for recruiting.

  • LEDs built into the pom itself, not one light in the handle, so the whole pom shows its shape.
  • One remote sets every pom to the same color; white to check placement, team colors to post.
  • A color change on 8 ends the drill on a reveal the whole team hits together.
  • Full metallic streamers work as a regular pom when the lights come up.

A four-week Technique Tuesday plan

Week Drill Filming Light setting
1 Placement drill: fists, then poms Front, chest height, whole line in frame White, gym lights down
2 Breaking arms: half T to T Side angle to show elbow height Team color
3 Daggers, candlesticks and touchdown at three tempos Front, slow, then full speed Team color, changed on the last 8
4 Three-level hit and ripple Raised camera from the bleachers White for the hit, team color on the snap

Post on the same day each week so your audience knows when to look. Keep each clip under a minute, with the count on screen, and end on the full team in one color.

Filming setup for the gym and the night field

  • Camera at chest height, centered, on a tripod, in the same spot every week so improvement shows.
  • Tape a front line on the floor so spacing reads.
  • Lights down to one wash in the gym; on a night field, film from the track with the team facing the stands.
  • Charge the night before. Each pom runs 3 to 4 hours per charge, and white and rainbow drain faster, so film the white placement drill first.
  • One person owns the remote and calls the color change on the count.
  • 7 oz per pom, the same set in Tuesday clips and on game night, so the motions the team drills are the motions fans see.

For the recruiting cut of the same footage, see dance team recruitment videos.

Frequently asked questions

What should a Technique Tuesday clip show?

One drill, counted on screen, with the whole team hitting the same motions. Placement drills, breaking arms and level changes work well.

What are the basic cheer motions?

High V, low V, T, half T, daggers, candlesticks, touchdown, diagonals and L motions: the motions in Varsity Spirit’s placement drill.

How do you get sharp pom motions?

Tighten the arm, not the wrist, and stop on the count. Drill slowly with closed fists, then with poms, then at tempo.

How do you film pom drills so they look clean?

Camera centered at chest height, lights down to one wash, a taped front line, and every pom set to the same color.

Do light-up poms work for practice?

Yes. The full metallic streamers work as a regular pom in daylight, and each pom is 7 oz on a rechargeable pack, with 3 to 4 hours per charge.

How much do light-up poms cost for a team?

$120 a pair on 10 or more pairs. A dance team of 16 with two spares is 18 pairs, or $2,160.
