What can we build for a space film or series?

Space stories run on practical light: helmet lights on a face, a lit chest pack, a panel glowing in a dark corridor. We design and build:
- Astronaut and crew wardrobe: suit lights on the chest, collar and sleeves, in one-off pieces or crew multiples.
- Hand props from scratch: helmets, scanners, communicators and alien artifacts.
- Space-opera wardrobe: lit crowns, gowns and harnesses for royalty, pilots and club scenes.
- Set pieces: light-up panels and trim for a cockpit, an airlock or a corridor.
LEDs sit inside the piece, color and pattern are set by remote, and rechargeable packs hide in the suit or a backpack. Neon Cowboys is a designer-led light-up fashion house founded in 2014 by Asia Hall, a computer science graduate and the daughter of couturier Kevan Hall. The wiring is engineered, and the wardrobe still reads as fashion.
Astronaut suits and helmets with light built in
Lighting a face inside a helmet is one of the hardest parts of a space costume. On Prometheus (2012), costume designer Janty Yates said the space suit and the helmet were the hardest part to get right, and that in the next prototype Ridley Scott wanted lighting all around the actor’s face; the finished suits carried integrated lights and twelve small, working LCD screens inside the helmet (source: Den of Geek).
We build to that kind of brief at your scale: light placed with your cinematographer so it flatters the face rather than flooding the visor, a lit chest pack or collar, and packs hidden in a backpack where the costume team can reach them between setups. Pick one steady color for a spacewalk, or a slow pulse for a suit that’s running low.
Spacecraft interiors and in-camera light
Directors who want actors inside a real environment build one. For Interstellar (2014), the stars outside the Endurance’s windows were projected onto a floor-to-ceiling curtain outside the spaceship set, not added later against a blue screen (source: Motion Picture Association). The same thinking works inside the ship: a console, a hatch frame or a corridor strip that actually glows gives the camera real light and the actor a real space.
We build light-up set pieces for those interiors, with LEDs in the piece, programmable patterns for alarms and power-downs, and color by remote, so the art department can match the set’s palette shot to shot.
Hero, stunt and background pieces for a space shoot
| Scene | Piece | Light behavior | Versions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spacewalk | Helmet and chest-pack lights | One steady, cool color | Hero for close-ups; a lighter stunt version for wire work |
| Cockpit or corridor | Light-up panels and trim | A slow pulse, then a red alarm pattern | Hero set piece plus spares |
| Crew briefing | Matched crew wardrobe with suit lights | Every suit in one color by remote | Hero for leads, BG for the crew |
| Alien club or cantina | LED harnesses and face stickers | Sound-reactive harness; stickers flash, blink or twinkle | BG multiples for extras |
| Throne room | Crystal headpiece and a lit gown | A solid color to match the set | Hero plus a double for continuity |
Order a double of every hero piece for continuity and reshoots, and your stunt coordinator signs off on every stunt version.
Space-opera royalty, crews and aliens

Space opera needs wardrobe that reads as another world. Our LED rhinestone gem headpiece sets hundreds of hand-set crystals across the brow and down the face, lit in color-changing LEDs, and we make custom colorways for a whole court. Our LED face stickers come in alien, star and lightning shapes and flash, blink or twinkle for about 4+ hours on a replaceable CR2032 coin battery, so they suit adult extras in a club scene; they stay cool on skin and are reusable from take to take.
Crews are multiples, and multiples are our home ground. We made Missy Elliott’s hat plus 20 matching dancer hats, and we’ve outfitted Beyoncé’s dancers on tour. A starship crew in one color is the same job.

Will the lights read on camera?
Our pieces have been filmed for real campaigns: Apple used one of our LED cowboy hats to showcase iPhone 13 Night mode low-light photography, and Google put our Out Past Midnight boots in a Google Lens commercial and on six-story billboards. Google also featured Asia Hall in its 2022 Black Friday spot, and Adobe’s 2021 campaign with Asia aired on Hulu.
Every set is different. Talk to us about your camera and lighting plan, share test footage if you have it, and we will work out brightness and color with your cinematographer and gaffer.

Frequently asked questions
Can you build a light-up astronaut costume for a film?
Yes. We design and build astronaut and crew wardrobe with LEDs built in, color by remote and rechargeable packs hidden in the suit or a backpack. Custom work is quoted.
Can you put lights inside a helmet?
Yes. Helmets are hand props we build from scratch. We place the light with your cinematographer and hide the rechargeable pack in the suit or backpack.
Can a whole crew match?
Yes. We build multiples in your custom color, and every piece is set to the same color by remote before each setup.
Do you build spacecraft set pieces?
Yes: light-up panels, trim and set pieces with programmable patterns for alarms and power-downs, quoted per production.
Are LED face stickers OK for extras?
For adult cast, yes. They run on a CR2032 coin battery, so keep spares away from children. They stay cool and are reusable.
How long does a space build take?
Send us your shoot date and we will tell you plainly what fits.
