What sci-fi props and light-up costumes can we build?

A sci-fi costume has to look engineered and still move like clothing. For costume designers, prop masters and art departments, we design and build:

  • Light-up suits and LED suits: light-line suits like the ones audiences know from Tron, designed from scratch for your characters.
  • LED harness armor: our harnesses as a layer of light over a bodysuit, a flight suit or bare skin, in your production’s colors.
  • Glowing sci-fi props: weapons, scanners, devices, helmets and crowns, built from scratch with the light inside.
  • Crew multiples: matched pieces for a ship’s crew, an army or a crowd of background players.
  • Light-up set pieces: practical light built into the set.

We sell what we build, and every custom piece is quoted. Send us your shoot date and we will tell you plainly what fits.

How the Tron light suits were built

The Tron films are the reference most costume designers bring to a sci-fi light-suit meeting, and both modern films put the light on set.

Tron: Legacy (2010). Costume designer Michael Wilkinson and co-costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark learned that the suit lighting would not be added later in CGI. “We needed the power to be self-contained on the actors,” Clark told The Hollywood Reporter. With Quantum Creations FX, they found a flexible light tape being made in the U.S. for the vests of Japanese security officials (source: The Hollywood Reporter). Clothes on Film reports the tape was wired to a 9V battery pack hidden in the disc on the back of the costume, and that around 150 suits were created for different characters (source: Clothes on Film).

Tron: Ares (2025). Wētā Workshop built 62 working light suits, plus helmets and costume versions of the discs and batons, with costume designers Christine Bieselin Clark and Alix Friedberg. Each suit carried up to five meters of LED strip in a tinted diffuser, brightness was fine-tuned on set by a wireless system, and a quick-release hatch under the disc let the team swap batteries in minutes on days when more than 20 suits were active (source: Wētā Workshop).

We did not work on either film. The lesson for a buyer: plan the power, the hidden packs and the multiples as carefully as the look.

Hero, stunt and background versions for sci-fi

Piece Hero Stunt Background (BG)
Light-up suit Full light lines, color by remote, packs hidden in the costume Soft build for fights and falls, with the light kept where it is safe Simpler light lines in the same color
LED harness armor Full harness with programmable patterns Fewer hard parts, pack placed away from impact The same harness in one solid color
Glowing weapon or device Detailed and lit, built for the close-up A soft, lightweight copy for action A lighter copy, lit for distance
Helmet Lit detail for the close-up A lighter version planned with your stunt team A simpler shell in the same color
Crew uniforms The lead’s version with full light Doubles for stunt performers Matched multiples for every BG player

Tell us how many of each you need and which scenes they work in. We quote them as one build, so every version matches the hero.

Why sci-fi costume designers bring us in

Neon Cowboys is a designer-led light-up fashion house founded in 2014 by Asia Hall, a computer science graduate and the daughter of couturier Kevan Hall. A sci-fi costume needs both halves: wardrobe that fits and moves, and light that sits inside it without showing.

We have built one-off pieces for artists, including a custom LED hand harness for Beyoncé and a light-up suit for Machine Gun Kelly, and we make multiples for ensembles: for Missy Elliott, her hat plus 20 matching dancer hats. We have outfitted Beyoncé’s dancers on tour. For a sci-fi crew, that means the lead’s hero suit and the background crew come from the same maker, in the same color.

What should you plan before the first fitting?

Sci-fi light-up costume fitting: a costumer adjusts a blue LED harness beside an actor in a red LED harness
  • Where the pack hides. On the back, at the belt or under a panel. Our harness runs about 4+ hours per charge, so plan a charging spot near set.
  • How the color changes. By remote, by programmed pattern or held solid for the whole scene.
  • How many versions. Hero, stunt and BG counts for every piece, plus doubles.
  • Who controls it on the day. One person from your team on the remotes keeps every take the same.
  • The camera and lighting plan. Send it with the brief, so we build the light to suit your setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a light-up suit like the ones in Tron?

We build original light-line suits like the ones audiences know from Tron, designed from scratch for your characters and quoted. We don’t make licensed costumes, and we did not work on the Tron films.

How were the Tron: Legacy light suits lit?

With a flexible light tape found with Quantum Creations FX, powered on the actors so nothing plugged into a wall, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Clothes on Film reports a 9V pack hidden in the disc.

How many light suits did Wētā Workshop build for Tron: Ares?

62 working light suits, each with up to five meters of LED strip and wireless brightness control on set, according to Wētā Workshop.

Do your LED suits get hot?

The LEDs in our programmable harness are designed to stay cool during wear. For a custom suit, tell us how long each setup runs and we will plan the packs around it.

Can you build hero, stunt and background versions?

Yes. We quote hero, stunt and BG versions as one build, so color and light behavior match from the close-up to the wide shot.

How long does a custom sci-fi build take?

Send us your shoot date and we will tell you plainly what fits. Every build is quoted.
