A hockey dance team performs in short windows (time-outs, intermissions and stoppages), often from a stage in the seating bowl or directly on the ice, in an arena where thousands of fans may be waving poms of their own on a playoff night. That is why the team’s poms have to stand out from the crowd, not just match it. Light-up poms in the team colour do that from every seat. Our team rate is $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs.

Who orders poms for a hockey arena?

Several NHL clubs run a squad of dancers, ice skaters or promotional representatives, and the roles vary by club:

  • Dance teams. The Florida Panthers dance team is a co-ed group that hypes the crowd and performs at time-outs, intermissions, special events, appearances and watch parties (source: Florida Panthers Dance Team). It has 18 members and performs both directly on the ice and from a stage in Section 109 during games (source: WFLX).
  • Ice crews that dance. The St. Louis Blues’ Blue Crew and ice crew are one and the same, and dance experience is needed to perform the in-game routines (source: St. Louis Blues Blue Crew). The Dallas Stars Ice Girls began as ten skaters clearing snow during time-outs and grew into team promotions and community events (source: Dallas Stars Ice Girls history).
  • Ice crews. Their core job is clearing the ice during media time-outs (source: Florida Panthers auditions).

The person placing the order is usually the dance team director or the club’s game-presentation department, and the same questions apply to minor-league and college programs.

What does a hockey dance team need from its poms?

Hockey staging is different from a basketball court or a football sideline, and that changes what a pom has to do:

Where the team performs What the poms have to do
A stage in the seating bowl Read across the rink to the far side of the arena
Directly on the ice Stand out against a bright white ice surface
Short stoppages and time-outs Make an impact in seconds, without a long build
Intermissions Carry a full routine for a crowd that has stood up to move

In every case the pom is what the far side of the arena sees, so size, colour and brightness matter more than detail.

How do you stand out when the whole arena is waving poms?

Pom poms are part of hockey playoff culture in some markets. The Colorado Avalanche place pom poms on seats before playoff home games; at one 2025 home game volunteers set out about 18,000 of them, one per seat (source: KDVR). The club also sells them by mail through its Pom Pom Post, and during the 2022 championship run watch parties and Pom Pom Post sales raised $565,000 for 27 nonprofits (source: DNVR).

When the whole crowd is waving poms, the dance team’s poms can disappear into the sea of them. Light-up poms solve that: the team is the one group in the building whose poms make their own light, and with remote colour change they can switch to the playoff colour on cue.

Light-up or metallic poms for hockey?

Situation Metallic poms Light-up poms
Regular-season stand stage, arena lights up Fine Brighter from the far side
Any lights-down moment your arena runs Disappear in the dark The only thing visible
Playoff nights with fan poms Blend into the crowd Stand out from the crowd
Theme nights New set per colour One set, any colour by remote

Many teams keep a metallic set for everyday use and a light-up set for the nights that are filmed and shared.

What does the team wear with them?

Pro uniform suppliers such as The Line Up make dresses, skirts and pom styles for NHL ice crews. Set the pom colour against the uniform and against the ice, and remember the team’s colours on the remote so the poms match the uniform every night.

How many pairs does a hockey team need, and what does it cost?

Order one pair per performer plus spares, together, so they match. Our team rate is $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs:

Team Pairs (with 2 spares) Cost at the team rate
Ice crew of 8 10 $1,200
Dance team of 18 20 $2,400
Dance team and ice crew, 26 together 28 $3,360

Shipping is quoted with the order.

Where will the set get used across a season?

  • Time-outs and stoppages on the stand stage or the ice.
  • Intermission routines.
  • Any lights-down moment your arena runs, such as pregame introductions.
  • Watch parties and community appearances, which the Panthers list among their dance team’s duties.
  • Theme and charity nights, switching colour by remote.

How do you request a quote for a hockey team?

Email or DM us with the number of performers, team colours, the date of your first game or event, and whether you need a playoff colour on the remote. We make the light-up pom poms ourselves and will tell you plainly what fits your timeline. See team orders for how a squad order works.

Frequently asked questions

Do hockey teams have cheerleaders?

Several NHL clubs run dance teams, ice crews or both. The Florida Panthers dance team performs at time-outs and intermissions, and the St. Louis Blues’ Blue Crew doubles as the ice crew and performs in-game routines.

Where do hockey dance teams perform?

From a stage in the seating bowl and, for some teams, directly on the ice. The Florida Panthers dance team does both, including a stage in Section 109.

Why do hockey fans wave pom poms in the playoffs?

It is a tradition in some markets. The Colorado Avalanche place a pom pom on every seat for playoff home games, about 18,000 at one 2025 game.

Why would a hockey dance team use light-up poms?

To stand out from a crowd that may be waving poms of its own, to stay visible in any lights-down moment, and to change colour for theme and playoff nights with one set.

How much do light-up poms cost for a hockey dance team?

Our team rate is $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs. An 18-member dance team with two spares is 20 pairs, or $2,400 at that rate.

How many pom poms does a hockey dance team need?

One pair per performer plus two or three spares, ordered together so they match.
