Homecoming Themes: What Works, What They Cost, What Photographs

The themes schools actually pick, what each one needs from a venue and a budget, and the lighting problem that decides whether any of them photograph.

The homecoming themes that work are the ones a whole school can execute: a clear visual the decorating committee can build, a dress code students already own, and a look that still reads once the lights go down. The most-searched themes are Enchanted Forest, Masquerade, Great Gatsby, Starry Night, Under the Sea, Casino Night and Hollywood. Almost all of them are lighting themes — the decoration budget goes further on light than on anything else, because light is what the room is missing at 9pm.

The themes people actually choose

Ranked by how often they are searched, which is a decent proxy for how often they are picked:

  • Enchanted Forest — greenery, canopy, fairy lights, dappled light. Forgiving of a low budget because foliage is cheap and a dark room does half the work.
  • Masquerade — masks are the dress code, which means students supply the costume themselves. Consistently the highest-participation formal theme.
  • Great Gatsby — art deco, gold, fringe, 1920s silhouettes. Looks expensive without being expensive.
  • Starry Night / Under the Stars — drapes, pin lights, a dark ceiling. The cheapest big-impact theme there is.
  • Under the Sea — blues and greens, flowing fabric, caustic light effects.
  • Casino Night — tables, cards, red and black, warm bulbs.
  • Hollywood / Red Carpet — step-and-repeat, carpet, flashbulbs. The theme most built around photos.
  • Y2K, 80s, Decades — no decorating required beyond music and signage, because students bring the theme on their bodies.

Picking one: four questions

  1. Can a student join in without spending money? Masquerade and decades pass. Black-tie does not.
  2. What does the venue already look like? A gym with a high ceiling suits drapes and Starry Night. A low-ceilinged hall suits Casino or Gatsby, where the detail is at table height.
  3. Where does the budget go? In a dark room, lighting changes more per dollar than any other category. Fabric and foliage are second. Printed signage is last.
  4. What will the photos look like? The dance is three hours. The photos are the yearbook.

The lighting problem nobody plans for

Every one of the top themes depends on a dark room. That is what makes them feel like an event rather than a gym with streamers in it. But the moment the room is dark, anything decorative that reflects light stops working — foil, sequins, metallic fringe, glitter backdrops all go flat without a source hitting them.

Which is why the themes that photograph best are the ones built around things that emit light: string lights in a canopy, pin lights as stars, uplighting on fabric, and anything a guest is wearing or holding that produces its own light.

Practical version: spend on light sources and on whatever the students themselves will be carrying into the photos. Spend less on printed backdrops, which disappear in a dark room anyway.

Homecoming week, not just the dance

Most schools run a themed spirit week into the game and the dance. The week does not need to match the dance theme, and usually should not — the week wants easy daily themes anyone can do, while the dance wants a single coherent visual. Two different jobs.

The one thing that should connect them is the colour story, so the game, the rally and the dance read as one event in the photos.
