Most custom merch is printed: a logo on a tee, a tote or a mug. Light-up custom merch is the high-end version, a piece people wear in the dark and keep. Neon Cowboys designs and makes it for artists, brands and events, including Kacey Musgraves’ tour merch and Topo Chico’s Bolo Chico campaign.
What makes light-up custom merch different from printed merch?
Printed custom merch puts your logo on a blank. It is cheap per piece, fast to order and easy to forget. Light-up custom merch is designed from scratch around your brand: the shape, the colors and the way the light behaves, steady, color-changing or pulsing to sound. It costs more per piece, and it does a job printed merch can’t: it shows up in a dark room, in every phone photo, and it gets worn again.
U.S. promotional products sales reached $26.78 billion in 2024 (source: PPAI, Feb. 20, 2025). Almost all of it is printed. If your audience has already seen every printed tee, the light-up piece is the one they notice.
Custom merch options compared
| Custom merch | Cost per piece | In a dark venue or party | What people do with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed tee or hoodie | Low | Disappears in photos | Wear it later, with every other tee |
| Printed tote, mug or pen | Lowest | Not seen | Use it, or leave it behind |
| Glow sticks | Lowest | Glows that night | Throw it away |
| Light-up custom piece (hat, clip, sticker, case, bolo) | Higher, quoted per project | In every phone photo | Wear it again and keep it |
The average promotional product is kept for about eight months (source: ASI Global Ad Impressions Study, 2016). The Kacey Musgraves x Neon Cowboys light-up hats are still being bought and sold years later, for hundreds of dollars on resale sites.
Who orders light-up custom merchandise?

- Artists and merch teams who want a tour piece besides another shirt. We made Kacey Musgraves’ light-up hats, butterfly clips and phone cases.
- Beverage, beauty and tech brands running an activation. Topo Chico’s “Bolo Chico” campaign used bespoke light-up pieces we designed.
- Festivals and promoters. We made branded merch and an activation at Stagecoach with AEG and Live Nation.
- Alumni associations and gifting suites. A University of Texas alumni VIP suite ordered 1,000 custom light-up face stickers.
What can custom light-up merch be?
Almost anything that carries a battery and a light: cowboy hats with your logo (we hold the U.S. utility patent on the LED cowboy hat), hair clips, phone cases that react to sound, face stickers in your shape, sunglasses, bolo ties, pillows and stagewear such as fringe jackets, dresses and harnesses. The best custom merch is tied to something your audience already loves: a song, a campaign line, a team color.

How much custom merch do you need to order?
Minimums are set per project. The rule is simple: the lower the unit cost a piece is built to, the higher the quantity it needs. A premium piece, built for an artist’s webstore or a VIP package, can run in a smaller quantity at a higher unit cost. Custom light-up cowboy hats start at 500 and custom-shape LED face stickers at 1,000 pieces. Our project form’s budget options start at $5,000 to $10,000.
Is the high-end version worth it for your budget?
Ask what the merch has to do. If it has to fill a bag at a trade show, printed is fine. If it has to show up in photos, sell out a limited drop or make a VIP feel the upgrade was worth it, the light-up piece earns its cost. Even when the budget lands on printed, it helps to know what the premium version would have looked like.
See custom light-up tour merch for every kind of project we take on, or start with custom LED face stickers in bulk if you need volume.
Send us the artist or brand, the look, the piece, your quantity, your budget and your dates. We make our light-up pieces ourselves and will tell you plainly what fits. Our project form’s budget options start at $5,000 to $10,000.

Minimums are set per project. Lower-cost pieces need higher quantities; custom light-up cowboy hats start at 500 and custom-shape LED face stickers at 1,000.
