Cheer bow size chart for team orders

Cheer bows are sold by the width across the loops. Three widths cover most team orders, and the classic pony bow sets the standard everyone compares against.
| Bow size | Width across the loops | Typical build | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 6 inches | Smaller loops, shorter tails | Smaller athletes, youth and mini teams |
| Standard | 7 inches | The classic pony bow: about 7 by 7 inches overall, tails about 5 inches, on 3-inch ribbon | Most athletes; the go-to size for school squads and competition teams |
| Jumbo (published example) | 7 by 6 inches | The ION Cheer Girls’ Essential Jumbo Hair Bow: 3-inch grosgrain with an attached hair tie | Teams that want a full, oversized bow |
| Extra large | 8 inches | Wider loops on the same style | Athletes who want the biggest bow on the floor |
| Our light-up cheer bow | About 6.1 inches (15.5 cm) | About 6.1 by 5.9 inches and 60 g; white with built-in LEDs; straight-cut or triangle-cut tails | Competition day, night games, showcases and banquets, in your team color |
Sources: Superior Cheer & Dance: bow size guide sells 6, 7 and 8 inch bows and calls 7 inches its most popular size, especially for competition teams; Academy Sports + Outdoors: ION jumbo cheer bow. Sizes vary by maker, so check each listing against the same four measurements below before you order.
What size cheer bow should a team order?
One size for the whole squad, chosen on real athletes. Start from the 7-inch standard and adjust for your youngest and smallest athletes.
| Team | Usual starting size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Youth and rec squads | 6 inches | A bigger bow can swamp a small head and a short ponytail |
| Middle school and junior high | 6 or 7 inches | Try both on your smallest and tallest athlete |
| High school sideline | 7 inches | Reads from the stands on a high ponytail |
| All-star competition teams | 7 inches, or 8 for a bigger look | Competition bows run larger and flashier |
| College squads | 7 inches | The classic look families and alumni expect |
| Night games, showcases and banquets | Our light-up bow, about 6 inches | Once the room goes dark, light matters more than an extra inch |
Cheerleading Company’s placement guide warns that oversized bows can overwhelm smaller athletes and throw off proportions (source: Cheerleading Company: how to put a cheer bow in), and Omni Cheer describes competition bows as often larger and much flashier (source: Omni Cheer: hair bows and ribbons). The rule that matters most for a coach is simple: pick one size and order every bow in it at once, so the line matches. For the rest of a team bow order, see cheer bows for teams.
How big is our light-up cheer bow?

About 15.5 by 15 cm, or 6.1 by 5.9 inches, and about 60 g (2.1 oz). That puts it right beside a 6-inch small bow and a touch narrower than the classic 7-inch pony bow, with one difference no ribbon bow has: it makes its own light.
- White with the lights off. It goes with any uniform.
- Built-in LEDs and one button. Click to cycle through the colors. No remote, no app.
- Tails. Tails come straight-cut, or we can cut them into classic triangle cheer-bow tails for your team.
- Worn high. At the crown, on top of a high ponytail, with the tails hanging down over the ponytail.

How do you measure a cheer bow?
Lay the bow flat, face up, and measure it the way suppliers list it, so you compare like with like:
- Width: tip of the left loop to tip of the right loop. This is the number in “a 7-inch bow”.
- Height: top of the loops to the bottom of the tails. A classic pony bow is about as tall as it is wide.
- Ribbon width: across the ribbon itself. 3 inches is the usual cheer ribbon, and Varsity’s suggested sideline bow is a solid 3-inch bow (source: Varsity: Celebrate Bow-vember).
- Tail length: from the knot to the tip of a tail, about 5 inches on a classic pony bow.
Measure one bow the squad already wears and write all four numbers on the order. It is the fastest way to make a new order match the old one, and it settles the “is this the big one?” question before anyone pays.
Bow size for competition, the sideline and night games

The setting changes which size reads best from the stands.
| Setting | What reads | Size tip |
|---|---|---|
| Sideline, daytime | Solid color, clean shape | A 7-inch bow on 3-inch ribbon is the standard |
| Competition mat | Big and flashy | 7 or 8 inches, one size across every team in the gym |
| Night football and lights-down openers | Light, more than size | A ribbon bow reflects light and fades in shadow; a light-up bow makes its own |
| Showcases and banquets | The team photo | Every bow the same size and the same color before the photo |
At night, a 6-inch light-up bow is the one that shows in the stands and on phone video. Every athlete clicks it to the same color and the whole line reads as one. See competition cheer bows for the mat and glow bows for night games for after dark. Competition rules vary by event, so check with your event producer before using anything lit in a judged routine.
Before you order: a size check for the whole squad
- Try two sizes on two athletes: your smallest and your tallest. Look from the top row of the stands, not from arm’s length.
- Check the tails: Woo! Jr.’s bow tutorial cuts tails a little short so they don’t block the athlete’s vision (source: Woo! Jr.: how to make a cheer bow). The tails hang down over the ponytail, never forward.
- Check placement: high at the crown, on top of a high ponytail, over the elastic. A bow that sits low looks smaller than it is.
- One size, one order: every athlete and alternate, plus two spares for the coach’s bag.
- Write the numbers down: width, height, ribbon and tails, so next season’s order matches this one.
