Light Up Neon Cowboys® Hat Troubleshooting Guide

If your hat won’t turn on, looks dim, or flickers, use this guide to diagnose the issue step-by-step.

This guide applies to all Neon Cowboys® LED hats, regardless of color, finish, or bundle.

Quick Checks (Start Here)

1) Remove the battery cover inside the hat and confirm 2 AA batteries are installed.
2) Press the circular button on the battery cover area. You should see a red light indicator on the inverter when it’s on.
3) Cycle through the 3 light modes (Solid, Blink, Flash). Some issues are mode-specific.
4) Check the white connector between the light wire and inverter—reseat it firmly.
5) If the hat briefly lights when you wiggle the rubber connection area, the issue may be in the light wire connection (see below).

NEEDS CONFIRMATION: The product page shows both “Batteries Included” and “2 AA batteries (not included)”. Please confirm which is correct for your current hat shipments.

Hat Won’t Turn On

  1. Remove the battery cover.
Remove the plastic battery cover inside the hat by wiggling it back and forth while pulling toward yourself.
If the cover is tough to pull off: use pliers to gently pull up the corner pins of the battery cover, then repeat the removal technique.
  2. Confirm the batteries are installed correctly.
Insert 2 AA batteries in the correct direction, then close the inverter cover.
  3. Check for the red light indicator.
Press the circular button to turn on the inverter. A red light indicates the inverter is on.
  4. Reseat the white connector.
Check the white connection point between the light wire and the inverter. If it’s loose, disconnect and reconnect it firmly.
  5. Inspect and straighten the metal pins (if needed).
Look at the metal pins in the white connector. If they’re bent or loose, gently straighten them and re-insert through the connector. Listen/feel for a light click to confirm it’s seated.
  6. Try a replacement battery pack/inverter.
If you’ve completed the checklist and the hat still won’t light up, the inverter may be bad.

Dim or Flickering Lights

Dim or flickering lights are usually caused by battery power or a loose connection.

  • Swap in fresh AA batteries. Weak batteries often cause dim output or unstable light.
  • Reseat the white connector. Disconnect and reconnect firmly.
  • Cycle modes. Test Solid, Blink, and Flash to see if one mode is affected.
  • Check pins. Bent or loose pins in the connector can create intermittent power.

Partial Lighting / Intermittent Sections

If only part of the hat lights up, or the lights work only when you move the wire, it may be a connection issue in the light wire.

  1. Turn the inverter on (confirm red light).
  2. Locate the rubber-covered connection area.
Find the clear/black rubber covering on the light wire between the clear wire and the lit section.
  3. Gently wiggle the connection.
While the inverter is on, gently twist/turn/wiggle the rubber connection back and forth to see if the wire lights for a split second.
  4. If it lights only briefly:
That indicates a light wire connection problem. In that scenario, a replacement hat may be required.

Water & Weather Exposure

The Light Up Neon Cowboys® Hat is described as water-resistant. If the hat was exposed to rain, follow these steps:

  • Turn off the inverter and remove the batteries.
  • Dry thoroughly before reinstalling batteries (including around the inverter pocket area and connector).
  • Do not submerge the hat in water.

Normal vs. Defect

What’s usually normal

  • Lights changing behavior when you switch modes (Solid / Blink / Flash).
  • Needing fresh batteries after extended use.
  • Fit adjustments using included foam padding (for smaller heads).

What may indicate an issue

  • No red light indicator on the inverter even with fresh batteries.
  • Lights only turning on briefly when you wiggle the rubber connection area.
  • Connector pins repeatedly bending or failing to hold a stable connection.

FAQs

How do I know the inverter is on?

When you press the circular button, a red light indicator turns on to show the inverter is working.

What batteries does the hat use?

The hat uses 2 AA batteries.

NEEDS CONFIRMATION: Please confirm whether AA batteries are included with current orders.

My hat won’t turn on—what should I check first?

Start with fresh AA batteries, confirm correct battery direction, then reseat the white connector between the light wire and inverter. Verify the red light indicator turns on when you press the button.

What if the connector feels loose or the lights flicker?

Disconnect and reconnect the white connector firmly. Check the metal pins—if bent or loose, gently straighten them and reseat until you feel a light click.

How do I know if I need a replacement inverter?

If you’ve tried fresh batteries, confirmed correct orientation, reseated the connector, and inspected pins—but the hat still won’t light—testing with a replacement inverter is the fastest way to confirm a bad inverter.

Different generations of hats may require different inverter connector types. Current hats run on “Male” (output) inverters—match your connector to the product listing images before ordering.

My hat feels too big—what can I do?

The hats are 23 inches in inner circumference. You can reduce head size by lining the crown with additional foam padding.
