What should a dance team wear for a lights-out intro?

Dance team intro in LED fringe sequin jackets glowing red: eight dancers, arms raised on an arena court under beams

Something that makes its own light. When the arena goes dark for player introductions, a sequin uniform only shines where a spotlight hits it, and the dancers who frame the court fade into the dark. Our LED fringe sequin jacket puts light on every dancer: LED fringe front and back, one solid color or color-changing modes by wireless remote, over the uniform the team already wears.

The intro is short and it changes. At Utah Jazz home games, the dancers’ moves for the 90-second player introductions change with every game, director and coach Ashley Kelson told The Salt Lake Tribune; the team waits in the tunnel and races onto the court on the cue (source: The Salt Lake Tribune). A jacket gives those 90 seconds a lit look without a costume change for every new routine.

Arenas build the night around the intro

The lights-out intro goes back at least to April 8, 1977, when the Chicago Bulls turned the lights out and put a spotlight on their players during introductions before a home game against the Houston Rockets. Their public address announcer, Tommy Edwards, recalled it as the first time, as far as he knew, that an NBA team had killed the lights during a lineup introduction (source: The Ringer). At Target Center, home of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx, a 2018 LSi Online profile of the arena lighting said it is used for dance routines and halftime, and that perhaps its most important role is during player entrances and introductions (source: LSi Online).

The production already spends on light for that moment. Light on the dancers makes them part of the show instead of a silhouette in front of it.

A run of show for the jacket

Moment What the dancers do Jacket setting
In the tunnel Line up in order, power on, look down the line Solid team color, every jacket at the same brightness
House lights drop Run onto the court and hit the first count Solid team color, full brightness
Starters announced Frame the tunnel or the baseline as players run out Hold the solid color so the line reads as one
Lights up Clear the floor and drop the jackets at the bench Power off to save the charge
Theme night or finale Jackets back on for a timeout routine or the last number Color-changing mode, or the theme color

Write the jacket cues into the game-presentation script next to the lighting cues, and name one dancer or team manager to check every jacket in the tunnel.

How do you keep the whole line on the same color?

Each jacket has its own wireless remote, so matching is a routine, not a gamble:

  • Label the remotes and power banks with each dancer’s name.
  • Charge every power bank before game day. One charge gives 4+ hours of continuous light, longer at lower brightness.
  • Set the color in the tunnel, not on the court. Choose one solid color for the walk-out; save the color-changing modes for later in the night.
  • Match the brightness on every jacket so no dancer reads brighter than the rest.
  • Hand the remotes to one person after the walk-out, so they are ready for the next lit moment.

The jacket is one size, US women’s small to large, with an open front, so it goes on over a crop top, a bodysuit or a full uniform. If your roster runs outside that range, send the sizes and we will tell you plainly what fits.

Poms in the same color

If your team carries poms into the intro, light them too. Our light-up pom poms have the LEDs built into the pom, not a single light in the handle, and the color changes by remote so the whole line switches together. Set the poms and the jackets to the same team color and the line reads as one shape from the top row. Each pom weighs 7 oz and runs 3 to 4 hours per charge; white and rainbow modes drain faster. Team pricing is $120 a pair on 10 or more pairs. More on poms in the arena in light-up poms for NBA dance teams.

Opening numbers, halftime and theme nights

The jacket is not a one-moment buy. Once the team owns it, it works anywhere the house lights go down:

  • Opening numbers at the first home game, a showcase or a recital.
  • Halftime and timeout routines, with the jacket on for the first eight counts and off for the rest. See halftime dance costumes with LED harness looks.
  • Theme nights, with every jacket set to the theme color.
  • Community events and parades after dark.

How long does an LED fringe jacket stay lit during a game?

4+ hours of continuous light from the included 5000mAh power bank, longer at lower brightness. Switch the jackets off between lit moments to save the charge.

Can the jackets match our team color?

Yes. Each jacket’s wireless remote sets one solid color or color-changing modes, so you can set the whole line to your team color before the walk-out.

Do the jackets fit every dancer?

The jacket is one size, US women’s small to large, with an open front and a flexible fit. Send your roster sizes and we will tell you plainly what fits.

Can dancers perform the whole routine in the jacket?

Yes, or wear it for the entrance and drop it at the bench. The open front makes it easy to take off between moments.
