Which one gets a high school cheerleader seen by college coaches?

Cheer camp vs clinic: squad in royal blue with blue light-up bows on high ponytails and blue LED pom poms at a night game

The clinic. A college clinic is taught by the program’s own coaches and team members, and it is built for athletes who want to cheer in college. Camp is built for your high school squad.

One spirit office shows the split clearly. UTA Spirit Groups runs one-day College Clinics for high school and current college students who think they may want to cheer or dance in college, taught by current team members, for $55. The same office hosts UCA summer camps for high school and middle school teams, which stay on campus or commute daily (source: UTA Spirit Groups: camps and clinics).

If the goal is a college roster spot, put clinics on the calendar. If the goal is a stronger high school season, go to camp with your squad. A junior or senior aiming at college can do both: camp in summer with the team, clinics in fall and spring on her own.

What cheer camp costs, and what it pays for

Camp is a squad purchase. The coach books it, and families pay a per-athlete share.

  • Resort camp: UCA’s camp at Sandestin in Florida ran June 15–18 and June 22–25, 2026, for junior high and high school teams. Athletes and coaches stay in the hotel, and the overnight price includes 2 lunches and 3 dinners, with no breakfast (source: Varsity: UCA camp at Sandestin).
  • Campus camp: UTA hosts UCA camps on June 2–5 and July 20–23, 2026, and teams choose to stay on campus or commute (source: UTA Spirit Groups: camps and clinics).
  • College-team camp: William Penn University’s two-day camp on July 15–16, 2026 cost $85 without an overnight stay and $100 with one, and taught a cheer routine squads can use for Homecoming or other performances (source: William Penn University: Cheer Camp 2026).

Ask your coach what the per-athlete figure covers. Lodging, meals and camp wear vary by camp, and the full figure is what you budget for.

What a college clinic costs, and what it pays for

A clinic is an individual purchase, one session at a time:

What you pay for is time in front of the coaches who pick the team, and their material. For seniors, see college cheer prep clinics for seniors; for the whole series, see college cheer and dance recruitment clinics.

What to bring to camp and to a clinic

For camp, your coach sends the packing list. For a clinic, the program posts its own, and it is specific:

  • UConn: navy or white athletic clothing and sneakers, with seniors and current college students in red; no jewelry, because athletes who cannot remove it do not stunt; water and snacks (source: UConn Spirit: High School/College Prep Clinics).
  • Texas State: underclassmen in white, juniors in black, seniors and college transfers in maroon; a signed waiver; two spectators per athlete at most (source: Texas State Cheer Clinics).
  • GVSU: all-black activewear (source: GVSU: Fall 2026 Prep Clinic).

Follow the host program’s posted dress code and material to the letter. Leave your own props at home unless the program lists them. More on reading a dress code: what to wear to cheer tryouts.

How should you practice between camp and clinic season?

Clinics teach fast. The athletes who stand out already hit sharp motions and clean levels without thinking. Practice that at home with a real pair of poms.

Our LED pom poms weigh 7 oz each, with full metallic streamers that work as a regular pom in daylight. The LEDs are built into the pom, so after dark the light shows every motion on your phone video: you see right away whether your high V is even and your punches stop clean. They are rechargeable and run about 3 to 4 hours per charge. A practice pair is on the LED pom poms page.

If your squad wears bows at night games, ask your coach about our light-up cheer bows: white bows with built-in LEDs, a button on each bow to change the color, no remote and no app, with a hair-tie option. See the light-up cheer bows page and light-up cheer bows for teams.

Send your coach the team order page, and if the booster club pays, share getting light-up pom poms through your booster club. Frequently asked questions

Is cheer camp or a cheer clinic better for getting recruited?

A clinic. It is run by the college’s own coaches, and some programs reward standouts with a tryout shortcut, like UConn’s Fast Pass. Camp builds your squad’s season.

How much does a college cheer clinic cost?

The 2026 clinics we checked ran $55 to $100 a session: $55 at UTA and GVSU, $85 at Texas State and $100 for UConn’s College Prep/Recruitment Clinic.

How long is cheer camp?

Several days at most camps. UCA’s Sandestin sessions in June 2026 ran four days with athletes and coaches in the hotel; William Penn’s 2026 camp ran two days.

Can I bring light-up poms or bows to a clinic?

Follow the dress code and material the host program posts. Our poms are for practice at home and for your own squad’s night games.

How heavy are your LED pom poms?

7 oz per pom, with full metallic streamers that work as a regular pom in daylight and LEDs built into the pom.

Does my coach get a team price?

Yes. Ten or more pairs are $120 a pair, and one remote changes the whole squad’s color together.
