At a Mardi Gras night parade the floats are brilliantly lit and the crowd is standing in the dark. That reverses the usual logic of dressing up: beads, sequins and metallics all need a light source to reflect, and on a dark parade route there often isn't one pointed at you. Anything that produces its own light — light-up hats, jackets, harnesses, boots or face stickers — reads instantly, both to the crowd around you and to riders looking down from a float.
Why night parades are different
Day parades and night parades are genuinely different events dressed the same way, and most people don't adjust. In daylight, a purple, green and gold outfit covered in metallic beads looks fantastic. After sundown on a parade route, the lighting situation is this: the floats have it, and you don't.
Everything reflective in your outfit is now waiting for light that isn't coming. Meanwhile you are one person in an enormous, dark, tightly packed crowd, all trying to get the attention of riders who are looking down into shadow.
