For prop masters and costume designers shooting comedy: we build light-up gags that land on the beat, from a harness that switches on mid-scene to a glowing hand prop, with hero, stunt and spare versions for every retake. Color changes by remote. Email info@neoncowboys.com with “Production inquiry” in the subject for a quote.
What makes a light-up gag land on the first take?

Timing. A light-up gag works when the light changes on the beat: the suit switches on at the punchline, the whole room goes the wrong color, a face starts blinking in a serious meeting. So the control matters as much as the look. Our pieces change color by remote, which lets a prop or wardrobe person off camera fire the cue, and our harnesses add a sound-reactive mode that pulses with the music on a dance-floor bit.
We build custom light-up wardrobe, hand props from scratch and light-up set pieces, plus multiples of our own pieces in your colors. Neon Cowboys is a designer-led light-up fashion house founded in 2014 by Asia Hall, a computer science graduate and the daughter of couturier Kevan Hall. We design the gag and the light together, so the joke still works in the wide shot and holds up in the close-up.
Comedy means retakes, so build for repeats
Comedy shoots a lot of takes: alternate lines, improv runs, a new reaction from every angle. A lit gag has to reset in seconds, take after take, and still look right on take fourteen. That means rechargeable packs with charged spares, a remote that lives with one person, and more than one copy of anything that gets dropped, sat on or thrown.
The original Ghostbusters (1984) shows the split. Its hero proton packs were molded fiberglass shells with working lights, including 15 blue scrolling lights and four red cyclotron lights that light in rotation, and they weighed around 35 pounds. For stunt scenes the production used lightweight foam rubber versions made from the same mold, without the electronics (source: Wikipedia: Proton pack). Working lights where the camera is close, a soft and safe version where the action is rough: that is still how we plan a gag.
Hero, stunt and background versions for a comedy shoot
Plan every lit gag as a set of builds, not one prop:
| Version | The gag | What we build | Light behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hero | The close-up reveal: the suit or prop switches on | Full detail with working LEDs | On cue, by remote |
| Stunt | Pratfalls, chases, collisions | A softer build matched to the hero’s look | Simple, or off |
| Background (BG) | A room full of extras in on the joke | Same color and silhouette, less detail | One solid color |
| Multiples | Retakes, alternate takes, second unit | Matched copies of the hero | Same settings as the hero |
| Spares | Something breaks on take fourteen | An extra of the most fragile piece | Charged and ready |
Send us the scene and the action, and we will quote the hero, the stunt version and the spares together.
Which comedy props can light up?

Almost anything the joke needs. These are the gags we design for most:
- The switch-on reveal. A harness, jacket or suit that lights at the punchline.
- The wrong-color gag. One remote changes a whole squad’s light-up pom poms at once, so the cheer section flips to the rival’s color on cue.
- The ensemble bit. A party, wedding or office scene where everyone is lit in the same color because someone overdid the theme.
- The blinking face. Our LED face stickers flash, blink and twinkle, with no steady mode, which is a joke on its own in a serious scene.
- Hand props from scratch. A glowing device, crown or helmet, built to the script.

Planning the gag with every department
A lit gag touches more departments than a normal prop, so bring them in early:
| Department | What they decide |
|---|---|
| Director | When the light changes, and how big the gag plays |
| Prop master | Hand props, triggers and who holds the remote |
| Costume designer | Lit wardrobe, fit and where the pack hides |
| DP and gaffer | How bright the piece runs against the scene’s light |
| Stunt coordinator | Which beats need the soft stunt version |
We work with whichever department carries the budget, and we keep the others in the loop on color and control.
How our pieces read on camera
A lit piece in the shot is a practical light, so it throws color onto faces and wardrobe. On our programmable LED harness and fringe jacket, brightness comes down by remote when a gag reads too hot next to a face. Our face stickers run on a replaceable CR2032 coin battery, so hand them to adult cast only and keep spare batteries with the prop team.
Our pieces have been filmed for major brand campaigns: Apple used a Neon Cowboys LED cowboy hat to show off the iPhone 13’s Night mode low-light photography, and Google featured our Out Past Midnight boots in a Google Lens commercial and on six-story billboards. Every camera package and lighting setup is different, so talk to us about your camera and lighting plan before we build.

Frequently asked questions
Do you make light-up props for comedies?
Yes. We design and build custom light-up wardrobe, hand props and set pieces for film and TV, plus multiples of our own pieces in your colors. Every job is quoted.
Can a light-up gag be triggered on cue?
Yes. Our pieces change color by remote, so someone off camera can fire the cue. Our harnesses also have a sound-reactive mode for music gags.
Do you make stunt versions?
Yes. We quote a softer stunt version matched to the hero’s look, with simple lights or none, for falls, chases and fights.
How many copies of a gag prop should we order?
At least a hero, a stunt version if there is action, and a spare. Comedy runs many takes, so anything that can break needs a backup on the cart.
How long does a custom build take?
It depends on the gag and the count. Send us your shoot date and we will tell you plainly what fits.
Can young actors wear the LED face stickers?
No. They run on a CR2032 coin battery, so hand them to adults and older teens only, and keep spare batteries away from young children.
