Most cheer squads order poms in two school colours, often split within a single pom, with metallic silver or gold as an accent because it catches stadium lighting. Pink, blue, red and green are the most requested single colours. The limitation of every traditional pom is that colour only reads while light is hitting it — which is why teams performing at night increasingly choose LED poms, where the colour is emitted and can be changed by remote.
The most requested cheer pom colours
- Pink — the most searched single colour, and the standard for breast cancer awareness games.
- Blue — usually paired with white, silver or gold.
- Red — high contrast in daylight; can go muddy under warm stadium lighting.
- Green — strong on turf in daylight, weaker at night.
- Purple — reads best with a metallic accent.
- Metallic silver & gold — accent colours chosen for shine, not hue.
- Black — graphic in daylight, effectively invisible at a night game.

How to split colours across a pom
Three approaches squads use:
- Two-colour mix in every pom — the most common, reads as one unified squad colour from the stands.
- Solid poms, alternating hands — one colour per hand; sharper on camera, stronger for choreography that isolates arms.
- Solid poms split across the squad — used for formations and colour-block effects.
Whichever you choose, confirm the exact split before production. Colour breakdown is the single most common mistake on bulk team orders.
The problem with colour on a dark field
Every traditional pom — plastic, metallic or holographic — reflects light. Your carefully chosen school colours only read while something is lighting them. When the stadium drops for a halftime routine, or you're in a dim gym, or it's a night game with the field lights behind you, the colour disappears.
That is the whole reason LED poms exist as a category.
Changing colour instead of choosing one

With LED poms the colour is emitted, not reflected — and with a handheld remote it isn't fixed at all. A squad can run school colours for the game, switch to pink for an awareness night, go to a single colour for a competition set, and change again between songs. One set of poms covers every colour you would otherwise have to buy separately.
Ours put the LEDs inside the pom itself rather than a single LED in the handle, so the whole pom glows in the colour you pick. The baton handle is made in your team colours, and orders of 10+ pairs can specify a custom colour mix.
